Yes, it was the rubber & tin from Malaya, as well as the lumber, spices, etc from indonesia. Spore's hinterland was Malaya & Indonesia. Back then people from Malaya & Indonesia would come to Spore because we were relatively better developed. They would come to Spore to get connecting flights/ships to other parts of the world.

LKY had little to do with this. We should actually thank the Brits for developing Spore, giving it the strong foundation.
