You may not be old enough to remember the Spore of the 60's but I do & it was a happening place. As my teacher explained, Spore was then the 4th busiest port in the world because of it's entrepot trade.
That's only because much of the tin and rubber from Malaya was exported via Singapore and much of what Malaya needed was imported the same way.
Without LKY, Singapore would now be a backwater. It certainly wouldn't have held on to 4th spot.

Yes, it was the rubber & tin from Malaya, as well as the lumber, spices, etc from indonesia. Spore's hinterland was Malaya & Indonesia. Back then people from Malaya & Indonesia would come to Spore because we were relatively better developed. They would come to Spore to get connecting flights/ships to other parts of the world.
LKY had little to do with this. We should actually thank the Brits for developing Spore, giving it the strong foundation. With such a foundation & strong strategic location & hard working population Spore would never have become a backwater
