its normally easier for us to thank strangers than people close to us.

Maybe it's got something to do with what the Old Man called "Asian Values" some years back.

Cheers!

Japanese has very courteous terms. Arigato, arigato gozaimasu, domo, domo arigato, domo arigato gozaimasu, gokurosamdeshita, zannennagara etc.

Singlish has two main terms, thank you or fuck you. Fuck you is way more popular in common usage here. :D

Of the two, Thank You is used by cissies. Fuck You is also much more assertive.

Cheers!

Fuck you is very versatile here in Singlish. For example, after a meal and round of drinks with friends, you can say "fuck you lah, I pay first, next time then you pay" or "fuck you lah, you pay first, next time then I pay" or even "fuck you lah, we all split the bill." Three-cornered fuck! Cheers!

You want me to say thank you or fuck you for your compliment? Just kidding. Drifter is the Shogun here. I'm just a Ninja, not even Samurai.

Not only partner, but anyone in SG.
Very rare to hear thankyou from anyone not in the retail or service line.
Even in this forum, not many forummers say thank you.
Got one veteran forummer, nearly 10 years arready, never seen him post a "thank you for your adviCe/support/help" or
for that matter even a "sorry for my mistake/misunderstanding".
The clue is his nickname start with g and also end with g.

Goh Meng Seng, the only one I can think off who can't take advice and can't spell sorry or apology.

ah ram this thread is not to teach how to use words ;)

asian values ? what kind of asian values ?

That's exactly what I was asking when this theme was being trumpeted by the Straits Mimes. The Old Man tried to make it out that Filial Piety was uniquely "Asian" and didn't exist in other societies, but that is so far from the truth, which is, in every society, you get a mixed bunch of nuts, some are like this, others are not, whether Asian, European, African, American. Trouble is when the old man says so, nobody, including the cock-sucking editor of the official newspaper dares say anything against it.

I would apply this same argument to your thread's title though, some Singaporeans will say thank you as appreciation, while some others may be oblivious. Meself, I might say "What took ya so long!!!"

Cheers!
