fan (番) pronounce as "huan " in hokkien have many usage in Mandarin.
番木鱉鹼- strychnine
番邦-foreign state
番茄-tomato
番仔-indigenous people (only in hokkien)
番茄紅素- Lycopene

Unlike mandarin, huan by itself doesn't have any meaning in hokkien and need to combine with other character to form a meaning. Many of the mandarin terms above cannot be literally translated in hokkien.
So can TS explain to us how does tomato and potato got anything to do with barbarian? Is it the barbarian's favorite food? Or to make it simple for the understanding of non-mandarin speaking forummers, does calling a person an "underdog" means that person is a dog? Or is a person a dog eater just because his favorite food is hotdog?
