PAP in a bind in an unexpected quarter - Marine Parade

The grassroots in Marine Parade is very different from any other GRC or SMC. It is the only place where the CCC chairman can be found sitting and drinking coffee at the local coffeeshop. He is no show-off. His kids are doctors and lawyers, he was GCT's school teacher, his wife is also a teacher and they live in a 5 room flat. GCT built it so strong that it was indeed different and solid. Laguna Park was also GCT's first home. The way they behave it appeared like quite genial. This was until the last elections. I have not kept for sometime. I was shocked that Ms Tin was in the team. I am not sure if the old guard are still there.

Whatever happens, it looks like GCT's goose is cooked.

The Lee's have been forced to tolerate GCT because of the perception that he is invincible. His poll numbers are therefore supposed to be 70% to 80%. Such is the myth of GCT's invincibility that everyone intially thought that NSP was sending a suicide squad.

I have alot of admiration for Ms Teo and know her background very well. She however is no politician and has not moved around enough to make an impact. She has been associating with ex-detainees on both sides of the causeway. Not many were aware of her desire to stand for election until the fall-out in RP occurred.

Many people are not aware of her sterling work in welfare, her Law Society fight with the establishment etc. These were long time ago and people have short memory. In contrast look at VW - he was nobody until he took the opportunity and made an immediate impact with his very first speech in Hong Lim.

It will be interesting how things pan out. Interestingly Grace Fu arrogance is Teo's best hope.

Have to agree that Ms Teo is running well behind. She seems pretty inactive or perhaps, not achieving much traction with her current efforts. She does not engage with the youth via social media or commentary. On the ground, which is more important, her activities seem very much muted. I question her motivation in standing for this election. Perhaps it is to make a statement but she is certainly not in it to win it. I can understand the lack of funds or volunteers to carry out any grassroots work. But efforts to canvass support or influence the young or more net savvy remains to be seen.

While Grace Fu is an arrogant bitch, she has inherited Yuhua which was very well managed by Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon. Yuhua is not an easy constituency to win, not even for the strongest of opposition candidates. Ms Teo would be lucky to get her deposit back based on current efforts. I am not a PAP supporter at all. Am merely voicing my concern and slight disappointment on the Yuhua election efforts so far.

I can tell you that the amount of money that were spent on the Malays is huge. It was done initially as national security concern to avoid an emergence of a 5th column but since 1990, it has been to keep the Malays close to the PAP. Ask any malay entrepreneur and if he was honest, he will tell you the amount that he has received over the years from Spring and and under various schemes. It very hard to wean them from it.

The other thing is that they all their proposed leaders must be endorsed by the community first. Its a done deal. Look at the quality of Malay opposition candidates and the answer is there. No Malay will want to incur the wrath of their own community. It does mean that the Malays love the PAP, far from it. It is a deal that works for them which no one else can provide. Ever seen a dirty mosque in terms of peeling paint etc. Ever parked illegally in front of church or hindu temple?

but i think the Malays will still vote for PAP, unless the WP has done a terrific job canvassing for Malay support(which they might have done given the very visible increase of young Malays in WP colours in their rally) or that there is a major shift away from their supported party. I don't think it is the Zainal's as speaker of Parliament issue but on the whole the Malays normally are conservative in choosing the one they are familiar with.

The 29K voters that are shifted to other GRCs also meant WP loses a significant numbers of votes compared to the last elections. Having said that however, there are several factors that may affect election outcome. This include the strong effect of the social media, the charisma of personalities, the track record of the govt in the past 5 years and the others.

I'm in Tampines GRC. No rallies here so far. Many flats have been upgraded or currently being upgraded. Just got the PAP brochures in the mail yesterday (Sunday). No sight of NSP. Awfully quiet from both parties.

I understand that TJS and Michelle have been well received. I am keen to see all 3 be front and centre. VW is still the best at getting the message across. I think the next election when all these capable people are band together in a proper party, the PAP will certainly be in trouble.

With the intake of new citizens, the PAP will get stronger in the next GE.

It's most critical that S'poreans vote for the opposition during this GE.

In conventional estimate,I think the PAP will get a very narrow victory with the Worker's Party, maybe narrowly winning between 2-3 %. The WP is hugely popular with the Chinese and Indian voters but i think the Malays will still vote for PAP, unless the WP has done a terrific job canvassing for Malay support(which they might have done given the very visible increase of young Malays in WP colours in their rally) or that there is a major shift away from their supported party. All my Malay friends in S'pore are gonna vote for the oppositions after old fart opened his mouth on Muslims not being able to integrate.

They don't give two hoods about Malay ministers in the PAP.

I believe that it is ungentlemanly for them to win Aljunied GRC, and then shortly after the GE, this Zainal resigns to be a Presidential candidate.

Perhaps, the WP should raise this issue with the electorate, and remind the electorate that they should vote for the WP.

I hope the WP win Aljunied GRC.

Zainal was supposed to stand down and go for the presidency. He has been retained to fight this battle. If they win, he will resign and go for the presidency. You are right, they need him.

Its Low and Sylvia that is going to make the difference. If they win, their votes are going to come from Ah Peh and Ah Soh who traditionally vote for PAP. As in Hougang albeit the Teochoew pull is noted, it still can be done.

Like you I can't wait for Aljunied to fall despite my respect for GY as a gentleman.

Mr. S. Puhaindran was a teacher at RI, when I was a student there. But I do not believe that he is that old to be GCT's teacher, unless Mr. SP was a young teacher during GCT's student days.

This is interesting. I suppose the Police and the AG can choose to prosecute on a slective basis. Even if the AG chose not to prosecute, there is nothing a citizen can do.

You are dreamily talking about a MP GRC which no longer exists. At the last gerrymandering excercise, LHL threw all the shit and crap from other grcs into MP. At the same time, he cut out the choicest bits to reinforce the other grcs. Pre Nicole, the new I would have expected NSP to get 40% easily. Throw in TPL and Nicole and I think we might be closer to 55%.

GCT is not bonding well in his new grc. He does well connecting with a PMET middle income crowd. He is however lost with lower middle and below. If you were at his. Hasty MPS of residents of red light Joo Chiat area, you will know just lost he and the few grassroots still loyal to him are to deal with the problems they are now faced with.

Finally the. MP grassroot itself is under threat. The person to watch out for is the BG who is tasked to wrestle it from GCT. The buddy system is not so much to shepherd the newbies but to keep an eye on them. For TPL, there were hopes she would help by being a sty. The idea was to give her husband a foot into the grassroots. Never in a million years did they expect her to the millstone she is now.

Joo Chiat is another one to watch. I'm from this SMC and the ground feeling is many are keen to vote in Yee Jenn Jong of WP as he is a local boy from these parts and look humble and sincere. Voters of Joo Chiat are not concerned by any of the so called upgrading rubbish and really have nothing to lose.

There was a funny story in the ST about a clinc assistant who told him that he used to go to their clinic in his pyjamas nearly 40 years ago.
It was rather clever of Yee to tell this story. Considering that his opponent is the immortal one, he just might have a chance.

Very well, please notify and persuade your friends and relatives in Joo Chiat. It is time to elect a mortal, and send the immortal to early retirement from the Parliament. Thank you.

Joo Chiat is a small SMC with just 22,069 voters. If you see Yee Jenn Jong's Facebook, he has connected with many of his old friends and teachers from St Patrick's School. This Old boys network could be more than useful as he is one of us unlike Higher Mortal Charles who has no ties with the area and voters are also not threatened in any way by any of the losing a Key Minister and upgrading rubbish.
