Softbank Mobile suspends order-taking for Apple's iPad

Friday 14th May, 07:00 AM JST

TOKYO —

Softbank Mobile Corp said Thursday it suspended the previous day taking orders for Apple Inc.‘s iPad tablet computer in Japan due to a supply shortage worldwide. The suspension came two days after Softbank Mobile, a mobile phone service unit of Softbank Corp, started taking orders ahead of the launch of the product in Japan on May 28 under a partnership with the U.S. firm.

In addition to Softbank Mobile’s own outlets, consumer electronics retailers also suspended taking orders for a basic iPad model with Wi-Fi wireless Internet access and a model which can use both Wi-Fi and 3G mobile network service.

It is not known whether Softbank Mobile will resume taking orders. Apple’s retail outlets in Japan are still taking basic model orders.

Softbank Mobile was chosen as Apple’s partner for the iPad sales in Japan as it has been serving as the exclusive provider of Apple’s iPhone in Japan.

Apple said it has sold over 1 million iPad units in the United States since its debut in April. The iPad will also be available on May 28 in eight other countries, including Australia, Germany and Italy.

Singapore telcos to offer iPad plans
ALL three telcos in Singapore said yesterday that they will offer price plans for Apple's iPad tablet in the "coming weeks".

By Kenny Chee,
mypaper | Photo:AFP | 15-07-10 0 commentALL three telcos in Singapore said yesterday that they will offer price plans for Apple's iPad tablet in the "coming weeks".

The telcos said the plans are for the iPad model that can access the Internet via 3G mobile networks as well as Wi-Fi hotspots.

M1 and SingTel said that they would be offering dedicated iPad plans, but could not provide further details.

StarHub said it would offer mobile-broadband plans for the iPad, but could not say if the plans would be dedicated to the device.

SingTel said it would not be selling the iPad, while M1 and StarHub were unable to comment if they would sell it.

Apple has previously said the iPad would be officially launched in Singapore this month.

Electronics stores that my paper contacted said Apple has indicated that the tablet could be released here later this month or early next month. One retailer added that the iPad could be available "not only through telcos but other channels as well".

Some savvy Singaporeans have already got their hands on the device as early as April, when the gadget was launched in the United States. The iPad is sold through Apple's website or retail stores in the US.

Stores and online auctioneers here also began selling parallel- imported iPads then, typically at above S$1,000 per unit.

The 16GB 3G iPad costs US$629 (S$870) in the US.

Sales shocker

Apple has been tipped to sell more iPads than Macs in 2011, as one analyst has dubbed them ‘Macs for the masses'.

According to unofficial Apple blog, Apple Insider, Gene Munster, a prominent analyst with Piper Jaffray, has said he believes Apple's successful tablet will outsell the Mac next year.

He is believed to have previously predicted that Apple would sell around 14.5m iPads in 2011, but has now upped his estimate to a staggering 21m units.

"We believe the iPad represents a meaningful product category for Apple as a secondary computing device for those who already have a primary computer, a primary device for those who could not previously afford a Mac, and the first Apple product that will be a success in the enterprise. We see the iPad as the Mac for the masses," he reportedly said.

Munster said his prediction is based on three factors: International rollout, a boost in supply and distribution channels plus an increase in use in the enterprise sector.

He reportedly believes Apple's decision to sell its tablet in more retail stores, such as Best Buy will help drive sales, with rumours a deal with US super chain Target is pretty close.

The recent launch of the iPad in China and 5 Latin American countries is also expected to significantly boost sales figures. Munster said the tablet is more likely to be used as a ‘primary computing device' in such ‘price-sensitive markets,' as people who could not previously afford to buy a Mac scramble to get their hands on the latest Apple kit.

Interestingly Munster also reportedly thinks the iPad could potentially net its largest percentage of sales from enterprise customers, as Apple has already said over half of Fortune 100 companies are testing or using the tablet.

Despite a plethora of tablets expected to flood the market at any second, he reportedly believes that Apple will dominate 94 percent of the worldwide tablet market by the end of this year, with iPads accounting for an enormous 10.7m of the 11.3tablets sold this year.

Although many people have trashed Android's current potential as a tablet os, Munster is said to believe that Android 3.0, or Gingerbread, could become Apple's biggest tablet os rival.

Apple shares have reached its highest levels at $290+ making it the 2nd biggest next after Exxon, even surpassing Petro China

With analyst predicting share prices reaching $390, it might even become #1 in the future.

People buy Apple Shares because they think this company has potential to churn out even more great products. However, they forgotten that without Steve Jobs, What is Apple?

The share price of Apple for today is because of Steve Job's vision and ideas to invent these great products. He is no immortal and no god. The day he is no longer in this company, that is the end of Apple.

So buying shares from a company that is solely dependent on their CEO's vision is very dangerous. That is a big lesson I learnt when I bought Chemoil years ago. When the CEO died in a helicopter accident in indonesia, Chemoil share price dropped at least 15% from news of CEO's death and never really recover.
Chemoil was started out based on the vision of Robert Chandran, and if he is still around today, Chemoil would be a good potential company dealing in marine fuel

While it's true that SJ is responsible for Apple's success, mustn't forget that Apple's success is due to the efforts of many people such as Tim Cook, Jonathan Ives, ..., numerous faceless managers & engineers.

Critics have said that SJ takes too much credit for the efforts of many. Even without him I suspect Apple will do well as long as they have a good CEO. The trouble is that he's not willing to let go of his baby & probably hasn't a succession plan in place

I'll probably get an Ipad v2.0 as I want to be able to print & maybe they'll put in USB connectors to make backups easier.

I'm also waiting to see what the rumoured 7 inch Ipad looks like.
