I'll probably get an Ipad v2.0 as I want to be able to print & maybe they'll put in USB connectors to make backups easier.

I'm also waiting to see what the rumoured 7 inch Ipad looks like.

I doubt there will be USB in the near future or there ever will be. But you can get 3 party solution

If Apple continues to limit the iPad, it may loose sales to the competition.

Apple might not want to add USB ports to avoid cannibalisation of their compute sales, but even with USB ports I think the iPad is appealing to a different market segment.

With the huge number of iPads sold Apple might do a rethink & make the iPad more capable. Even if they don't include USB, with the many upgrades to IOS, the OS for the iPad, there will be many improvements: multi-tasking, airprint,...

So no harm waiting a few more months to see what the next iPad has to offer

Re: great sucess again, ipad selling like hotcakes. steve jobs did it again.

While it's true that SJ is responsible for Apple's success, mustn't forget that Apple's success is due to the efforts of many people such as Tim Cook, Jonathan Ives, ..., numerous faceless managers & engineers.

Critics have said that SJ takes too much credit for the efforts of many. Even without him I suspect Apple will do well as long as they have a good CEO. The trouble is that he's not willing to let go of his baby & probably hasn't a succession plan in place

Steve Jobs is Apple, Apple is Steve Jobs.

One day he goes, expect the stock price to plummet and no one else will be able to deliver a keynote that is as well received as Steve Jobs, even if the keynote is 200% better than what Steve Jobs gave.

His cancer scare the other time already brought the share price down by a couple of notches.

Everyone dies eventually even LKY

I think Apple can survive without SJ. The cancer scare showed the problem of succession planning & I hope Apple does a better job the next time around.

As a shareholder of AAPL I'll probably be cashing out by then, when the price is in the $300 or maybe $400

I bought iPad last week

Best 1228 dollar I ever spend. iPad is awesome. Game are great on iPad. I get to buy cheap and weightless book call ebook by kindle.

I do not have to worry about all the space in my room.

I get to buy uk magazine and newspaper cheaper than if I get it in uk, the great thing, I am not even in uk.

Then I also can buy us magazine. Most are rubbish, but some time they are worth it, I do not have to pay overprice magazine in times and borders any more.

I also put my excel sheets and PDF in iPad to read like a book. No need to carry notebook with me all the time.

iPad is worth it, if you dun think so, it is your loss.

rejoice football fans of epl

if you buy new paper to read football news, you can now dump it.

because if you have an ipad, you can subscribe to UK the sun newspaper for 7.99 sterling pounds - 30 days and you can get lots of epl news straight from uk paper, you do not have to read new paper ever again.

the only problem is they do not have sunday paper included in this deal. So you have a gap. It is up to you if you can accept this.

Also the paper have boobs too as a bonus.

All Hail Ipad. I love my ipad, it give me access to books , foreign magazines and foreign newspapers.

I don't think they have a plan B.

Anyway back to Ipad, think they got a great product, but what matters is must have use for it. No use for it, even the greatest product will not be useful

Many people think that Tim Cook is plan B. Apple shares took a tumble when it was rumoured that he was going to HP.

Apple is currently the number 1 tech company in the US. Bet there are many talented people who would like to work for such a company. So its very unlikely that people like Tim Cook would move elsewhere.

Tim cook maybe the "unofficial" replacement. But I think essentially a 2-3 more people is going to be in key roles in Apple after SJ is gone. Johnny Ives is another that would cause the shares of apple to nose dive if he leaves.

Actually I think it's a team effort.

Even though Steve Jobs gets most of the attention. There's alot of people behind the success of Apple.

SJ has been criticised for hogging the limelight much like LKY the so call "founder of Spore "

iPad Sees Record-Setting Adoption Rate, Poised to Become 4th-Largest Electronics Category

Tuesday October 05, 2010 12:06 PM EST
Written by Eric Slivka

CNBC reports that the iPad has become the most quickly adopted non-phone consumer electronics product in history, topping the DVD player, which shifted only 350,000 units in its first year on the market. Apple sold over 300,000 iPads in its first day, and took just 28 days to reach one million units sold.

iPad sold three million units in the first 80 days after its April release and its current sales rate is about 4.5 million units per quarter, according to Bernstein Research. This sales rate is blowing past the one million units the iPhone sold in its first quarter and the 350,000 units sold in the first year by the DVD player, the most quickly adopted non-phone electronic product.
While many products have quickly reached sales into the millions of units, Bernstein appears to be focusing on consumer electronics categories, where the iPad has seen unusual success as the launch product in a segment as it has been jumpstarted by its connection to the rest of Apple's iOS ecosystem.

Perhaps more interesting is Bernstein's observation that the iPad is set to become the fourth-largest consumer electronics category in 2011 with over $9 billion in sales.

At this current rate, the iPad will pass gaming hardware and the cellular phone to become the 4th biggest consumer electronics category with estimated sales of more than $9 billion in the U.S. next year, according to Bernstein. TVs, smart phones and notebook PCs are the current three largest categories.
Bernstein's Colin McGranahan also suggests that the iPad is likely to be "cannibalizing" even TVs and digital cameras, noting that customers who make $600 iPad purchases are likely to delay purchases of other electronics due to financial considerations.

japan are in panic

TOKYO — First came ‘‘iPod shock,’’ which knocked Japan’s favorite gadget — the Walkman from Sony, and its line of successors — off its long-held perch at the top of the tech-savvy wish list. Then came ‘‘iPhone shock,’’ which sent Japan’s cellphone companies — long used to scoffing at the clunky offerings from their overseas peers — scrambling to develop similar smartphones.

On Friday, ‘‘iPad shock’’ hit Japan, threatening to bring upheaval to an ever-widening slew of industries in a nation once proud of being on the cutting edge of technology.

The iPad tablet computer from Apple went on sale in Japan and eight other countries — Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland — after selling more than one million units in the United States.

A flood of orders in Japan for the iPad caused Softbank, the exclusive phone carrier of the iPad in Japan, to stop accepting them after three days.

About 1,200 people lined up for the release of the iPad at an Apple Store in central Tokyo on Friday.

‘‘Apple never fails to wow me, time after time,’’ said Sayuri Aruga, 38, who sings in a progressive rock band in Tokyo. Ms. Aruga, who said she owned multiple iPods, an iPhone and a MacBook Air, flew to San Francisco in April just to get her hands on the Wi-Fi model of the iPad but now wants a 3G model, she said. She arrived at the store at 4 a.m., four hours before it opened.

‘‘I’m going to do everything on it — read, write music,’’ she said. ‘‘The possibilities are endless.’’

Michihiko Ueno, a 26-year-old design student who had joined the line at 9 the previous night, said he felt sad that a Japanese company had not come up with a device like the iPad first. ‘‘This makes me feel America’s way ahead,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a new device, or even like a new way of thinking.’’

Similar lines were seen at Apple stores in Europe.

At the store under the Louvre Museum in Paris, Daisy Maison, 52, couldn’t say why she came out on the first day. ‘‘We don’t know why we do it,’’ she said. ‘‘That’s just how it is with these things.’’

Mrs. Maison, who works in the antiques business, said she intended to use her new iPad ‘‘to connect with customers.’’

Cara Garisch, a 26-year-old software developer from Cape Town, South Africa, was passing through Paris and en route to business school and decided to pick one up. ‘‘The iPad is the first tool that simplifies web usage,’’ she said.

But not everybody was convinced. Many waiting to get into the Apple store in Paris said they were there to buy an iPhone.

In Tokyo, Toshihiko Sakai, 43, dismissed the idea of a tablet computer. ‘‘I don’t need any more gadgets,’’ he said on his way to work at a nearby trading company.

The hype around the iPad in Tokyo highlights what has become a sobering reality for a country once considered the technological trend-setter. Japan now frequently looks overseas for innovation.

Japan’s electronics makers, like Sony and Panasonic, have been usurped on one end by rivals elsewhere in Asia, which have overtaken the Japanese by making cheaper versions of the products Japan long dominated.

Samsung Electronics of South Korea now leads the global television market with an almost 25 percent share in flat-panel TVs, according to DisplaySearch. Acer, based in Taiwan and the world’s No. 2 vendor of personal computers after Hewlett-Packard, now has twice the market share of Japan’s top PC company, Toshiba, according to IDC.

On the other end, made-in-Japan electronics have lost their innovative edge to American companies like Apple. The iPod now leads the digital music player market in Japan. And despite initial skepticism from critics — who said the iPhone lacked many of the functions that Japanese were used to, like mobile TV — it has been wildly successful among Japanese. Shipments of the iPhone more than doubled, to 1.69 million units, in the year ended in March, giving Apple a 72 percent share of the country’s smartphone market, according to the MM Research Institute.

On Thursday, Sony said at a news conference that it would create an electronic book reader and online content distribution platform in Japan, China and three other markets, to add to its offerings in the United States, Canada and a number of countries in Europe.

‘‘Competition is heating up in this business, not just in Japan but around the world,’’ said Fujio Noguchi, senior vice president at Sony Electronics. ‘‘We feel that the market is going to take off all at once, and it’s a natural time for us to make a move.’’

Other industries are being shaken up by Apple’s latest export.

Once solely focused on creating video games for dedicated consoles like the Wii from Nintendo and more recently for cellphones, the Japanese game developer Konami Digital Entertainment released an iPad version of its popular Metal Gear Solid Touch this year. Another game maker, Capcom, says it will reformat its BioHazard 4 for the iPad.
