I believe the security forces were shocked beyond belief when they arrived and saw the mammoth mob!!! They drove right into the mob and were quickly surrounded by angry rioters. There was no way they could fight the mob. Unless they drew their firearms and started shooting. This would lead to more casualties and more deaths!!!

They did the right thing. Withdrew and let the rioters had their fun. Fight another day. Look at the rampaging and angry mob - they were surrounding the buses and the vehicles in all directions. They were dead ducks. If they fought, they would be killed.

So to avoid an already bad situation turning tragic, our security men did the best thing at that moment: gracefully withdrew, excercing restraint and let the riot burn itself out.....

And we will follow up with OUR ACTION....peacefully, diplomatically but efficiently. Wake Up Singapore!!!

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said all its injured personnel have been discharged from hospital.

The release said that of the 60 personnel deployed for the Little India accident between a private bus and a pedestrian on Sunday evening, 12 had sustained injuries such as lacerations on the face and cuts on their hands. It was earlier reported that the SCDF personnel were sent to the emergency area of Tan Tock Seng hospital early Monday morning, where they mostly received outpatient treatment.

"The injuries sustained were due to projectiles hurled at them while they were carrying out their duties at the incident site," said the statement. "All of them have since been discharged from the hospital."

The release said that the nine SCDF vehicles that were badly damaged consisted of three ambulances, a red rhino, a fire engine and four support vehicles. One of the ambulances was completely burnt at the incident site, while the remaining damaged vehicles had "varying degree of damages such as smashed windshields, and scratches and dents to the doors and frame".

"Notwithstanding this incident, we would like to assure the public that there is no disruption to the provision of our fire-fighting, rescue and emergency ambulance services," said the news release. "The morale and spirit of SCDF personnel remains high and committed towards our life saving mission."

In a separate press release on Monday, the police said that 22 police officers and five auxiliary police officers sought treatment at the hospital. All of them have since been discharged from the hospital.

Police have classified the traffic incident between the private bus and the pedestrian as Causing Death by Negligent Act, and the subsequent incident as Rioting with Dangerous Weapons. The driver is assisting Traffic Police with investigations into the traffic incident.

Police have arrested 27 people, aged between 23 and 45, in connection with the rioting incident. Of them, 24 are Indian nationals, two are Bangladeshi nationals and one is a Singaporean Permanent resident.

The press release said 16 police vehicles were damaged in the rioting incident. The damaged vehicles have been removed from Race Course Road and Hampshire Road and the affected roads were opened at 6.45am.

Members of the public with any information about the riot are advised to submit them via www.spf.gov.sg/iwitness and www.spf.gov.sg/CrimeStopper.

You should deploy non-lethal weapons for riots.

Where are the rubber bullets and taser guns? What's the point of having live ammo, then waiting for your humji superiors to give further instructions?

In short they were not prepared for spontaneous outbreaks even though you can see this almost every night in some place in the world on TV. I doubt they could break up a fight in Clark Quay.
That will change pretty soon no doubt. Forty years of relative calm has softened them. One wonders what else our highly paid government and civil servants are still unprepared for.

Think the police did a wonderful job. Fire a gun need to write report. Just park enough cars there and let them expend there energy overturning the cars and burning them. Once tired they will go back to dorm and sleep. Monday still need to work unless you are arrested.

All the training at PA wasted. Of course we only practice with about 20 plus recruits.

To prevent the situation escalating out of control. Firing into the crowd even with non-lethal weapons would have provoked them even more.

SPF can't protect sinkees and keep the peace.

Why no tear gas? No water cannon? Instead the poodles just stood by and let the Ah Nehs run the show.

Now, the poodles have charged the sinkee driver with negligence causing death without proper investigation.

The mob was over-whelming. If you had been to Little India, you would know by now that the little place has expanded into Bigger India stretching from Rex Cinema to the old New World....and the whole place is flooded on a SUNDAY with many foreign workers.

If news of any death or any gun fire or the use of firearms by our security forces, the situation would have been catastrophic!!! The action taken by our security forces ( one of great restraint) was admirable. Not a single shot was fired despite the gravity of the situation. It was something most unexpected but it is something which many of us here had warned our Government about - the potential danger of too many foreign workers congregating in one enclave.

A major shift in our foreign workers policy is called for - for the safety and security of all Singaporeans.

This shows that the SPF cannot keep peace. Simple as that. And that it kowtows to foreign rioters.

It is always easy to criticize on hind-sight.

If you had seen the mob, your balls would have shrunk to your mouth.

But our Home Team stood steadfastly with their guns and exercised great restraint in the face of the maddening mob....Kudos to all our security forces. A misjudgement would have been catastrophic!!!

Please, please stop justifying the cowardice of the SPF. They could not keep peace. That's a fact.

They charging the sinkee bus driver for negligence shows that the SPF is afraid of the Ah Nehs. That's another fact.

99.999% of our police never fire a single shot on duty in their entire career. It natural they get cold feet when face with such situation.

pls....anyone with brain will see through the tactics why they are holding at that point first.

Ground zero too many to handle, retreat (smart move). then hold at the choke point to block and to contain the crowds and to prevent the riot from spreading to other area.....once ready then break in. Even i have zero police riot training can see through it.

Heard it the Gurkha who went in. Task force simply useless.

This is the usual doctrine employed by ppl in power. Let the barbarians fight the barbarians method. Use by the chinese for the past 5000 years. It a well tried method.
