Software designer Yang Ming lost his job in Beijing whilst preparing to marry his girlfriend. He concealed the truth from her and lied that he had enough money to pay for the down payment of 310,000 yuan (50,640 USD) for an apartment worth 760,000 yuan (124,180 USD) at Fengtai District in Beijing.

Yang and his girlfriend managed to gather 140,000 yuan (22,880 USD) but were still urgently in need of 170,000 yuan (27,780 USD) to pay for the down payment before the deadline on April 14, 2013.

That April, of China's 70 large and medium-sized cities, 68 recorded year-on-year increases in home prices, with the highest rate in Beijing and Guangzhou, which saw prices rising by 13 percent.

Yang became determined to rob a bank located on Beijing's subway line six. According to a witness, he shouted "give me 300,000 yuan" before being quickly captured by the bank staff and police.

After the trial, Yang said he was only thinking about buying an apartment in Beijing and getting married, and his sudden impulse led to the huge mistake.

An anonymous prosecutor suggested a sentence of ten to twelve years. "High home prices should not be the excuse to conduct bank robbery", said the prosecutor.

Yang's girlfriend has not contacted him since he was put under custody.
