There is something VB can do.

He can summon the Indonesian Ambassador and tell him that this situation is unacceptable. Issue a strong statement that Singapore is not willing to put up with this anymore, and demand that the Indonesian government takes action against these errant farmers who are setting the forests on fire.
If not, Singapore will impose sanctions against Indonesia, and possibly even impose a trade embargo preventing any Singapore imports or exports. If he does that, the Indonesians will at least know that he is serious.

But does he have the balls to do such a thing?

If Singapore had any cojones it would have flew military planes over those hotspots in Indonesia and dropped dry ice bombs on them. If some farmers die as a consequence, too bad.

No permission or approval from the Indonesian authorities required.

If the Indonesian ambassador is not happy, or if Indonesia complains about 'unilateral infringement of sovereignty' to ASEAN or UN, simply claim that it was done due to humanitarian/health concerns.

But seriously, this is one situation where no propaganda can be inserted into his message -

"inclusive?" all of us FTs, PRs, citizens, we all get to breathe the same air.
"citizens must do more to improve the situation" - what can we do? nothing, right?
"help each other/bonding" - can anyone breathe in more, so that his neighbour does not have to breathe in so much.

The reality is that Vivian is just one bugger of a bully who is good at thumbing down the people who gave him his job and when it comes to abang/adek situations, he shrinks more than he normally does. And even if he says something, unlikely to be profound. After his latest gaffe of "self-inflicted" dengue, maybe he has learnt to keep his big mouth shut - at least he thinks we won't take him for a bigger fool than he actually is. And hope, for his sake, that no one in his family circle gets dengue - it will be really ironical then.

For the first time, you have said something sensible, we can not blame the PAP for everything, this is beyond their control. They have done a very good job keeping the air clean in SINgapore, but it is always external factor they can not control..so, don't blame them.

It is good too, NEA can save money handling out aerosol cans of insect spray for the Indonesian smoke, will clear out most of the mosquitoes.

At least the smoke is not self inflicted...

VB will never dare or even the Sillypore gahbrament won't think about making such a move.
Why so? That's because over the years of nation building, Sillypore has never think of having a core competency in self reliance and self sustaining economy. It has screwed up big time such that Sillypore now needs Indonesia more than they need us.
