Chitchat When Hotel 81 was all the rage in the late 90s to late 20s.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I’m curious if anyone remembers how quickly other budget chains tried to copy that whole model back then. It felt like the whole scene shifted almost overnight. Did any of you ever notice differences between the various branches, or were they all basically the same vibe?

Funny how those old habits around quick stays shifted over the years. I’ve ended up preferring longer, slower breaks these days, like a quiet weekend at a resort where I once stayed in Khao Yai, which helped me reset in ways those whirlwind hours never could. Your post really brings back how fast everything changed and how different the pace feels now.

I was told the original hotel was at No 81 along one of the G lorongs. he just expanded and expanded after that. Most (if not all) of the building are self owned hence he survived the pandemic... this guy is damn lucky
The uncle no study one that’s why. End up also became billionaire. Fragrance using same biz model also huat but fragrance came from rich family lee Wah jewellery scion.

He kena tekan by PAP when they found out he donated to opposition. Pap outlawed the transit model overnight. Uncle fought back by discounted whole day rates. Ended up uncle got someone to mediate and that’s why uncle donated millions as apology gesture. Transit was reinstated after that except for his Joo Chiat 81 hotels which the ruling still stands until today as reminder

Uncle has a heart. During yearly F1 season. All his hotels no surcharge for Singaporean bookings. A nice gesture

A lot of the budget hotels have been acquired then refurbished by Coliwoo. During the Covid years and the years after it.

At first I thought it's a company owned by a flamboyant faggot named Colin Woo. :roflmao:

Before and after, at Pasir Panjang Road. Other examples at Amber Road, the downtown area etc.
