This is a concise study of Workfare, a supposedly holistic approach to encourage
older low-wage Singaporeans to work and train. Workfare is constantly trumpeted
by the Government to be a more effective way in assisting low income workers
than minimum wage policy. This scheme is only valid to Singapore citizens who
are 35 years old and above, earning up to $1,700 per month and staying in a
property with Annual Value of not more than $11,000
assessed as at 31 Dec before the work year.

It is the wish of this writer that the main features of this scheme be
highlighted to the average Singaporean so that a conclusion can be
made if Workfare is really helpful to him/her and whether this
approach is holistic or otherwise.

Workfare consists of two parts: Workfare Income Supplement (WIS)
Scheme which encourages older low-wage workers to work regularly
by supplementing their income and retirement savings while the
Workfare Training Scheme (WTS) Scheme encourages older
low-wage workers to upgrade their skills through training.

The Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) Scheme was announced
during the 2007 Budget Speech as a permanent scheme following
the one-off Workfare Bonus Scheme. The objectives of WIS are to
supplement the wages and CPF savings of older low-wage workers
as well as to encourage them to stay employed.

This article is to misinform simpletons who got
no concept of the beauty in simplicity .

I will get to the point soon enough .

Upgrade from a dish washer to washing the dishes with a dish washing machine, under the supervision of an AH TIONG's supervisor. That is the upgrade.

A smokescreen is always effective to get people to listen to you. Now our Govt is putting a smokescreen to these people that if you learn and upgrade, you can earn more money, without telling you that most employers rather take foreigners who are cheaper.

pretty much sums it up. and workfare is just discriminating against young grads who a lot much talent and education that most of the old folks who actually find that money useful. no wonder more youth stabbings now.

Right, nothing great! Govt should just withdraw everything. Eveyone will be happy and no complains on the internet!

Happy?

:D

Got medicare bo?

Medicare is what US public healthcare insurance system is called.

In Singapore, despite being about 100 times smaller than US in population size, we have three, Medisave, Medishield and Medishield.

Medisave is actually your own money, forced savings.

Medishield is actually insurance with premiums paid from your own savings.

Medifund, now that's something, public (or government) money.

But you'd have to prove that you're three-quarter dead and totally broke.

Medicare is paid by employers in US, mostly fully paid and some ask you to co-pay for your depedents. We call it medical benefits and only full-timers get it.

There is also social security and that covers unemployment benefits and retirement as well.

But you cannot compare the richest country in the world with an island country. All the innovation in the last 50 years originate from US as they benfitted vastly as the victor nation of WW2. How about SG?

So, don't always make your life difficult and compare SG with other countries.

If the all the following you said is true .
What is the difference of one saving his own money and place
into his own fund with full autonomy .

With more earnings to over take the low interest rates of
the system and contribution of both sides .

Because workfare end up in the pockets of
workfare afiliated companies .
For every SDG $1 you make $40 goes 3 places 3 times .
Instead of directly into worker's pockets .
In short you are buying into the slavery of yourself .
Which you will see no end .

US is like me.
owe money everywhere...and everyone still think i am very rich.....
there is a saying something like this....

Owe $10k and the borrower got a problem.
Owe $100m and the lender has a problem...of course US owe much much more than that.
