There's no point wearing the mask without eye protection because the easiest route to the respiratory system is via the eyes. Tear ducts drain directly into the sinuses.

If someone in the same carriage who is infected sneezes the droplets containing the corona virus will be sprayed far and wide and enter the eye. The eye's natural response is to produce tears which will then drain into the nasal cavity via the Nasolacrimal duct thereby transporting the virus to the respiratory system where it can start to do its damage.

Proper protection requires a fitted N95 mask plus air tight goggles. Otherwise you might as well not bother. Wearing a surgical mask without eye protection isn't just an inconvenience it's pretty much useless.

This is the level of protection required to protect medical personnel from being infected by patients.

On the other hand surgical masks only protect patients from being infected by medical professionals during surgery. That is why they are called SURGICAL masks.

That is why the only time surgical masks are useful is when a person is sick. It will reduce the viral load of each cough and sneeze somewhat and hopefully reduce the probability of infecting others.

A PMD would be by far the best option. That is why I have consistently condemned the curbing of PMD use.

I appreciate the usefulness and viability of PMDs, we just need licensed riders. Treat them as we would motorcycles since they should only be used on roads. Licensing, tax, mandatory helmets, etc.
