Yes the guy who asked about the reserves and got a "56 man years" answer and then not a state funeral.

But Ong was a PAP member. He in fact was more involved in the Marxist Conspiracy stuff than TT--he got the NTUC to protest again the US First Secretary's involvement in it.

But he has been labelled to be the "best" President for "opposing" the govt ans asking about the reserves.

So from PAP man, people still voted for Ong. And Ong turned out to be no rubber-stamper or quiet man.

Would this be the case for TT, TKL and TCB?

Ignore TJS. In fact, TJS could turn out to be the same--so pro-opposition but once a President, sit back and relax.

With due respect, OTC did not become vocal without rhyme or reason. The period of the 26 man-years controversy coincided with a period of hardship for him whereby he developed cancer and his wife became ill and eventually passed away. The life-changing hardship changed the man, brought back some conscience to his once lost soul.

Yes, finally you highlighted the situation that caused the change in him. Everyone said he is a good man. I agreed but only for the period after he had contracted the terminal illness. Prior to that, I have heard many stories on the man and his architectural firm - typical of any man with influence and power. Whatever the case is, he changed and passed on as a good man - only a little too late. So, should we hope the next EP to contract something early and become a good EP?

I honestly believe he saw the light & repented for all his "sins" while he was a PAP minister. He tried to do the right thing during his final years & for that, he regained the love and respect of a nation. He is in a different league altogether from Yesman/Prataman.

All he did was asked one question....too late too little........i wouldn't glorify the guy but at least he tried.

LKY used OTC to champion the cause of closing Nantah and consolidating NTUC under government. Tasks that Devan Nair couldn't complete totally since he's Indian, especially the part about closing Nantah. Both were made presidents and both were made to resign unceremoniously. OTC did fight for the assurance of CL2 in all schools for Chinese and preservation of top Chinese schools as SAP as he agreed to the fact that a Nantah Chinese degree was no longer tenable.

Hi Steffy,

Another excellent point from you again.

Could TJS turn out to be a pro-opposition but once President, sit back and relax? Yes, he could and the probability of that is... low. Chances of TJS ruining the Govt is also low because of the limited powers of an EP. However, if he takes a rouge approach of crossing the line too far, upsetting the Govt, it would have very serious negative repercussions for future opposition members come 2016 and beyond - this is something that he really needs to be mindful of if he wins the election. On the other hand, if he managed to become the next people President, that would likely (and truly) sweeten future GE ground for the future opposition members.

For TT: Probability of a layback President (Nathan-like) is close to certainty
For TCB: Probability is high
For TKL: Probability is med-high.

Thanks for another new perspective to support TJS.
