Imagine fellows like this Ong Soo Eng (who's obviously Chinese; yes he is indeed Chinese) introducing himself to a white man:
White man: "How are you? My name's Michael."
Ong Soo Eng: "Hallo. Me arh? Orh, my name is Daniel."
Seriously, what's going through a white person's mind everytime a Chinese person introduces themself by an Anglo name (Daniel, John, Richard, Theodore, Jane, Nicole, Grace, Debra, Peggy, whatever) instead of their Chinese birth name?
Some Chinese even give themselves 2 or even 3 Anglo names, such as Michael Theodore Tan for example.
The white person is likely thinking that this Chinese person wants to be white. The white person has already been subconsciously elevated to a higher status.
You don't see Thais, Vietnamese, Japanese, Koreans, Burmese, Malays giving themselves Anglo names. Really. You don't.
The only other race fond of giving themselves Anglo names, other than Chinese, are Indians. One day you are told "John Thomas" is turning up for a meeting. Expecting to see a white person, a Brit maybe, an Indian turns up instead. (You later realise his name is John Thomas Abishgenathan.)
Seriously. Why the need to take up an Anglo name? What's wrong with the birth name?
