A newborn baby girl was found dead inside a cardboard box discarded in a rubbish bin in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district in the early hours of Thursday, prompting an urgent police investigation. The discovery was made by a refuse collector who alerted authorities after opening the box during routine waste collection. Police said the infant is believed to have died within the previous 12 hours.
The incident was reported at 02:50 on 29 January 2026, when Pol Lt Col Nakhon Tangruamthap, an investigating officer at Huai Khwang Police Station, received a notification of a deceased infant at Soi Pracha Uthit 1 in Huai Khwang district. Police officers attended the scene along with forensic specialists, a forensic pathologist from Ramathibodi Hospital, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The area was secured to preserve evidence.
At the scene, officers found the body of a newborn female wrapped in a white T-shirt and placed inside a brown cardboard box that had been thrown into a rubbish bin outside an apartment building. Authorities reported no visible wounds or signs of injury on the body. Preliminary assessments indicated the baby had been dead for no more than 12 hours before being found.
A waste collector told police that he noticed a heavy cardboard box inside the rubbish bin while collecting refuse in front of the apartment building. He said he initially did not suspect anything unusual and transferred the box with other waste to prepare it for loading onto the rubbish truck. While working, he noticed a strong smell and saw a white T-shirt, which he picked up to wipe his hands.
The worker said he was “very shocked” when he realised the T-shirt was wrapped around the body of a newborn baby inside the box. He immediately called a colleague to confirm what he had discovered before notifying the police. Officers then cordoned off the area to allow forensic teams to carry out a detailed examination.
Police said investigators are questioning people in the area and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from nearby buildings and surrounding streets. The aim is to identify the person or persons who abandoned the body and to determine the circumstances leading to the infant’s death.
Thaitabloid reported that the baby’s body was transferred to Ramathibodi Hospital for a full post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police said further updates would be provided once forensic results and CCTV analysis are completed.
