To drifter: Do you rear any of these snakes?

Yes, I suspected rodent/rat holes were the cause of the problem but it had been reduced but the snake was still seen... anyway it was last seen 2 weeks ago and I hope that's the last. Thanks for the advice.

Your case sounds like relatively small river or bush snake that can come up through the sewage or chute. Call 999 when you see it next. It was very common in my Police Academy barrack days. A snake, however small, is an aggressive reptile, not an evasive rodent. And we'd never know which one is venomous.

Same as with any other animal, go for the jugular.

SC Drifter, I've caught python big enough to feed a whole patrol team for dinner. But of course, we were not allowed to cook and and eat it.

At 5-figure S$ of course it's not meant to be eaten, with scales and features nice enough for display as trophy pets.

SIO ram ...last time i caught snake but i bring back home leh ( lai tong fook say ok ) ....;)

Pythons aren't venomous.

To be specific, it was a cobra. A small black thin one about a metre or so.

I was told that the police can be called, but what can they do? Shoot the cobra?

they either kill the cobra or catch it ....bullet is more expensive then cobra ...

That would mean the head or neck. Anyway, some of us injured its body and it went away, but apparently didn't die. Before that, it reacted with a fierce confrontation to our crowbars.

Like I've said, snakes are aggressive by reflex that you either leave alone and hope it goes away or you catch it or kill it. Aggressive action in attempt to catch it will provoke even more aggressive reaction, unlike insects that'll flee. If the idea is not to kill it but keep it as pet or to farm for food, the skills to soothe it in submission and obedience are essential, as practised in India, Thailand etc. Otherwise, call 999. Police will just catch it with a looped pole, dump it in a sack and hand it over to the zoo to decide what to do with it. If the snake was considered too aggressive and dangerous, police will just kill it on the spot, by strangulating it with the loop or shooting it.

Snakes are very difficult to aim at and shoot at. But it did happen once in a while. The usual way is still not to aggravate it and loop it.

i dont even think that police will use .38 just to shoot a snake . ;)

You should know. Patrol cars don't carry loop pole or pump gun. When attending call of snake in an area, reinforcement is called for to bring loop pole and pump gun.

You forgot VC. The only firearms VC is trained in and allowed to use is pump gun. But he's not allowed carry it unless case by case activated. SC, PC and above carry revolver. That was my time. I don't really know what SPF has changed to by now.
