Student guilty of murdering flatmates

A Sydney student has been found guilty of murdering his two flatmates.

A Supreme Court jury found 30-year-old Ram Puneet Tiwary guilty of murdering his two male flatmates at their Kingsford unit in 2003.

Tiwary and his 26-year-old flatmates were from Singapore and studying engineering at the University of New South Wales.

The victims were stabbed and bashed with a baseball bat during the day. Tiwary said he was asleep in his bedroom at the time.

The Crown argued that Tiwary owed $5,000 in back rent.

The jury heard he was on a scholarship provided by the Singapore armed services and despite failing some subjects, told the army he had passed them.

He is yet to be sentenced.

A SYDNEY student has been found guilty of murdering his two flatmates by bludgeoning them with a baseball bat and stabbing them.

In the NSW Supreme Court today, a jury found Ram Puneet Tiwary, now 30, guilty of murdering Chow Lyang Tay and Poh Chuan Tan, both 26, on September 15, 2003, at their shared Kingsford flat.

All three were Singaporeans, studying engineering at the nearby University of NSW.

The victims were stabbed and bludgeoned with a baseball bat in the middle of the afternoon, with the jury rejecting Tiwary's claim he had been asleep in his bedroom at the time.

"He was asleep in his room when his two friends ... had been savagely and brutally beaten and killed," David Dalton, SC, for Tiwary, told the court during the double murder trial.

"But because he said he was asleep in his room that has given rise to suspicions."

The Crown alleged Tiwary, a scholarship student, had owed $5000 in back rent and claimed his life was falling apart as a result of the debt and other matters.

The court was told the scholarship was provided by the Singapore armed services and under that agreement, his fees and an allowance were paid.

He was required to study full-time, although he did not re-enrol for one of his semesters and had failed some subjects, instead telling the army he had passed.

Tiwary remained composed as the jury handed down guilty verdicts on two counts of murder and Justice Peter Johnson adjourned the matter for a sentencing hearing on November 13.

Judgement is based on facts , circumstancial evidence and sincerity in cross examination . Twist and turn , beat around the bush and suspicious replies can be detected easily by a fair court .

Even if he gets away he will not be able to sleep well with images of the deceased coming after him . Why not serve they sentence for committing such crimes and hopefully clear your conscience paying for the crime. UNfortunately , this will live with him for the rest of his life , he knows jolly well what he has done. He can act innocent and cheat man / judge but he cant cheat GOD.
