There may be a new president in Washington DC, but it appears that the Biden Administration will continue with freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs) in the South China Sea.

On Jan. 24 (Singapore time), Reuters reported that a U.S. Navy group, led by the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, entered the South China Sea to promote "freedom of the seas."
This came just days after Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president.
Rear Admiral Doug Verissimo, commander of the group, said:

"With two-thirds of the world’s trade travelling through this very important region, it is vital that we maintain our presence and continue to promote the rules-based order which has allowed us all to prosper."

He added that it was "great" to be in the South China Sea to conduct routine operations, promote freedom of the seas and reassuring America's partners and allies.

Taiwan and China

The group entered the South China Sea reportedly on the same day as an incursion into Taiwan's air defence identification zone by Chinese military planes.
According to ABC Australia, the self-ruled island deployed air defence missile systems to "monitor" the incursion of eight nuclear-capable H-6K bombers and four J-16 fighter jets.
It commented that the number of planes was "unusual" as previous incursions have generally involved one or two reconnaissance planes.

U.S. State Department

The U.S. State Department released a statement on Jan. 23, titled "PRC Military Pressure Against Taiwan Threatens Regional Peace and Stability", saying it notes with concern the pattern of ongoing "PRC attempts to intimidate its neighbours, including Taiwan."
It urged China to engage in "meaningful dialogue" with Taiwan, cease pressure against it and stressed that the U.S. would deepen its ties with Taiwan.
Biden's nominee for Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said during his Senate confirmation hearing that he had no doubt that China posed the most significant challenge for the United States of any nation.

Taiwan has reported a large incursion by Chinese warplanes for the second day running, a show of force that coincides with the first days of US President Joe Biden's term of office.

Sunday's operation involved 15 aircraft and followed a similar drill that led to a warning from Washington.

China sees democratic Taiwan as a breakaway province, but Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state.

Analysts say China is testing the level of support of Mr Biden for Taiwan.

In the US's first public remarks on Taiwan since Mr Biden came into power, the US State Department reaffirmed its "rock-solid commitment" to helping it defend itself. There has been no official comment from the Chinese government.

China has carried out regular flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwanese-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea in recent months.

But they are usually conducted by one to three reconnaissance or anti-submarine warfare aircraft, according to Taiwan.

Why is China bullying Taiwan in the middle of the global pandemic?

Military tensions have risen between Taiwan and China despite the global coronavirus pandemic after Beijing conducted a series of military drills near the island.Taiwan’s Military News Agency
In yet another telling aspect of Beijing’s response to the global coronavirus crisis, China is now busy bullying Taiwan.
Beijing has always claimed sovereignty over the island, even though the democratic republic has largely dropped its claim to be the mainland’s legitimate government. But China’s rulers seem especially eager to intimidate Taiwan in the wake of the global pandemic that began in Hubei Province.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, China in early February flew a number of H-6 bombers over the sea just southwest of the island and then into the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.
The next month, Beijing sent several J-11 jet fighters and KJ-500 early-warning aircraft over waters southwest of Taiwan, nearing the country’s air-defense zone.
The mainland described the latter incursion as carrying out “air-ground assault and fire support drills to further refine and test” combat capabilities.

Many people around the world have a bad impression of Chinese tourists due to the way they behave when visiting foreign countries.

In the past few years, these tourists have really earned a really bad reputation worldwide. You can read these articles from South China Morning Post, The Economist and the Huffington Post.

Even those of Chinese descent in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan are unable to tolerate such behaviours.

For instance, in Hong Kong, there were instances where Chinese mothers allowed their children to urinate in public which made several HK residents extremely unhappy. When confronted by HK people, the mum slapped one on the face and rammed another with the pram.

In fact, in response to a poll by the SCMP.com headlined “What makes some Hongkongers dislike mainland China and its people?”, more than 50 per cent readers blamed the negative feelings on “ill-behaved tourists” believing that they have money but not the manners.

The Chinese government has recognized this problem themselves. In a bold move to crack down on rude China tourists, the officials have begun adding the names of the above offenders to a new blacklist which may affect their freedom to travel.

The Communist Party’s Central Guidance Commission for Building Spiritual Civilisation and the China National Tourism Administration have also recently issued a 128-character-long rhyme to remind tourists of behaving in a “civilized manner” on the road.

Many Chinese nationals also frown upon the bad behavior of their fellow country men. The topic has been a big hit on China’s social media, where bloggers discuss and criticize the uncivilized behavior of other Chinese tourists.
