"With two-thirds of the world’s trade travelling through this very important region, it is vital that we maintain our presence and continue to promote the rules-based order which has allowed us all to prosper."
U.S. State Department
The U.S. State Department released a statement on Jan. 23, titled "PRC Military Pressure Against Taiwan Threatens Regional Peace and Stability", saying it notes with concern the pattern of ongoing "PRC attempts to intimidate its neighbours, including Taiwan."
It urged China to engage in "meaningful dialogue" with Taiwan, cease pressure against it and stressed that the U.S. would deepen its ties with Taiwan.
Biden's nominee for Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said during his Senate confirmation hearing that he had no doubt that China posed the most significant challenge for the United States of any nation.

Taiwan has reported a large incursion by Chinese warplanes for the second day running, a show of force that coincides with the first days of US President Joe Biden's term of office.
Sunday's operation involved 15 aircraft and followed a similar drill that led to a warning from Washington.
China sees democratic Taiwan as a breakaway province, but Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state.
Analysts say China is testing the level of support of Mr Biden for Taiwan.

China has carried out regular flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwanese-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea in recent months.
But they are usually conducted by one to three reconnaissance or anti-submarine warfare aircraft, according to Taiwan.

Military tensions have risen between Taiwan and China despite the global coronavirus pandemic after Beijing conducted a series of military drills near the island.Taiwan’s Military News Agency
In yet another telling aspect of Beijing’s response to the global coronavirus crisis, China is now busy bullying Taiwan.
Beijing has always claimed sovereignty over the island, even though the democratic republic has largely dropped its claim to be the mainland’s legitimate government. But China’s rulers seem especially eager to intimidate Taiwan in the wake of the global pandemic that began in Hubei Province.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, China in early February flew a number of H-6 bombers over the sea just southwest of the island and then into the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.
The next month, Beijing sent several J-11 jet fighters and KJ-500 early-warning aircraft over waters southwest of Taiwan, nearing the country’s air-defense zone.
The mainland described the latter incursion as carrying out “air-ground assault and fire support drills to further refine and test” combat capabilities.
