The Brits did not run road because of no where to run, as you said. The Brits fully expected to defeat the Japs and win. There was no plans or preparation for them to run road, because that was never their intention, and because they never expected to lose. If you think you will win big time before the battle, why plan to run road at the first sign of invasion? For reasons of racial bias (Jap pilots do not fly well because they have slant eyes, etc) and because they underestimated the battle hardened and tactically superior Jap force, the Brits were defeated. In fact, Yamashita had a smaller army and was at the very end of his supplies and ability to continue fighting. When he met with Percival at the Ford Motor Factory, he expected to be asked to surrender instead of the other way round.
SIngapore was hardly abandoned by the Brits as you claim. In fact, the Brits stationed over 150,000 men in Malaya and Singapore. Percival himself led 85,000 in the defence of singapore. Whereas Yamashita had only about 30,000. The Brits had at this time been already fighting in Europe for 2 years. They could have easily diverted these men and their equipment to North Africa or some other European campaign. There was no German threat in Asia and the Japs had not remotely entered the war. While it is true that Percival was incompetent, and some of the leaders under him were also the same, and its also true that he was given alot of raw and semi trained troops, and also outdated equipment, what is not true was that Singapore was abandoned by Great Britain. The loss of the 2 capital ships Repulse and POW indicates they intended to stay and fight and win. Otherwise, these 2 ships would have been in the Atlantic on convoy duty or participating somewhere else.

U are right. Percival is 1000 times better then any of the SAF scholar generals. He actually fought in the Battle of SOmme in WW1 and was seriously wounded. He led a series of agressive actions and was awarded DSO, Croix De Guerre and other awards. He was a battle proven small unit and mid unit level commander. Many SAF scholar generals would have thrown up at the sight of a dead body.
Sandhurst awards a BA in International Studies in conjunction with Cranfield University and Open University.
