If you are a Japanese and read porn openly, you will be shamed by all the stares from fellow countrymen and women. Porn is acceptable if you watch or read it privately, despite all the magazines and porn shops. If you go to the porn shops, the Japanese in the shop will be so terrified of being recognized that some will turn up the collars and wear caps.

Its all about society pressure to conform. Its that bad.

Fortunately for foreigners, we can be excused from this.. so if someone reads porn on the train its highly probably a foreigner..

Japan is one of the most interesting countries that I have been. Very high on the scale for politeness and safety. But restrictive in many areas to non-Japanese or non-Japanese speaking people.
