I've just started reading this book.. The author tries to explain why the Western civilisation have done so well in the last 500 years while the East dipped so badly. He listed the factors including system of rule, geography, weather etc etc. Very interesting revelations so far (only reached chapter 2).

....What pisses me off is that chinese ppl are negatively stereotyped for no good reason or hated or lambasted for the silliest reasons. Like some whites hate chinese but they don't have any compelling reasons to. Now before the other guy in your brain comes back to screw me, let me say that I'm Indian and proud to be one. As are Chinese, Malays etc. All of us got issues and peculiar traits relating to our ethnicity and we have to deal with this. All of us are racists to some extent but you take it to the extreme.

One last point, have the "two" of you ever wondered why Singaporean Indians and Singaporean Chinese and Singaporean Malays seem to be different from the originals from India, China and Malaysia? Based on the negative responses, we seem to be better. Why? Could it be that the living and mixing with our fellow Singaporeans of all races have helped us evolve into better species than the Chinese Chinese, Indian Indians and the Malaysian Malays...?

I remembered reading somewhere that the abacus is much better than the calculator. No?

Much faster, especially in addition and subtraction. For complex division, the calculator is a tad faster. Proven by many tests of comparison.

What is more interesting is that kids in China and Japan are now being taught the abacus method of mental calculation, where the child visualises an abacus in his mind when he does calculations. Not only is this method of mental calculation superior to others, it's been shown to be effective in developing the right brain, long associated with creativity and artistic ability.

I wonder why they say, "yellow, yellow dirty fellow". You will understand this if you go to rural china or china about the time the british were there and conquered Hong Kong.
Actually malays used to be nice. But That did not get them anywhere. So now they try to mimic the chinese. maybe by doing that, they will be more successful.

The west are systematic. They do not waste time teaching you rote learning. memorising the multiplication tables are a waste of time as far as they are concern. Especially when there are calculators that can do the job for you.

Instead of memorising things, the west want your basic skill and ingenuity to blossom. The ones born with this extraordinary talent is what they want in their society. The whole concept of their education is to catch these people as they will contribute in a very big way to the society.
Why bother, for instance learning the tables when it is better for the gifted to learn how to control football like Messi.
Or come up with new math formula to complete a theory.
