In all its 5000 yrs civilisation, one can always cite evils like corruption in the courts, opium addiction, constantly warring, disunited, and even a concubine can be an Empress. China would not be able to move forward without foreign ideas e.g. Deng studied in France and had French ideas, Sun Yat Sen's republic was a Western idea, Chiang KS schooled in Russia etc.

Its still rote learning. The chinese teacher in the article has his doubts if it can be learned in the west due to the pronunciations of the tables. Sure, you can multiply faster, but what if its 103497642 times 784002983532 ? What the west is learning now maybe dumbed down. But, its used because its the "correct" way of deriving something all the time. Sometimes, its not how fast you get to the answer, but how you get to the answer that is important.
