72歲的張鎮國下午受訪時大表無奈，他表示，近兩年來生意每況愈下，最近生意更比以前掉了9成，「吃蛇肉的人越來越少，一天能賣10碗就偷笑了」，加上年紀大了於是萌生關店念頭。
他說，店內員工就剩他和太太與小姨子，蛇肉店熄燈後，想退休去雲遊四海，原有店面不打算盤讓，也不出租，「景氣那麼差，誰想來做生意」，反正房子是自己的，拉起鐵門住樓上沒差。
他又說，日前已不再進蛇肉，賣完為止，7月底結束營業，希望老顧客這幾天能回來看看。
張鎮國指出，他第一份工作就是開蛇肉店，殺蛇及蛇肉料理都是退伍後才學的，過去六合夜市附近風化場所林立，不少男性顧客都是為壯陽上門，加上現場殺蛇秀表演，吸引觀光客駐足，全盛時期光是蛇湯一天可賣上百碗。
「生意很差，也沒人接班，都已70幾歲了，乾脆退休不做了」，張鎮國表示，取「今日蛇園」的店名代表只販售當天現殺的蛇肉。店內三杯蛇肉、生炒蛇筋皮和蛇鞭酒等蛇肉料理，美味又有特色，國內外饕客上門光顧原本絡繹不絕，但隨著六合夜市風光不再，動保意識抬頭，政府禁止殺蛇現場秀，加上蛇肉短缺，生意一落千丈。
他表示，店內所有蛇肉全是非保育類楠蛇；他並自豪擁有全台首張「殺蛇」登記證，從殺蛇、剝蛇皮、放蛇血、取蛇膽、剪蛇鞭等一手包辦。
