SINGAPORE - A 70-year-old man who was having a meal at Teck Ghee Square hawker centre on Sunday night (June 2) suffered injuries to his head after the chair he was seated on came apart, causing him to fall.

Photos of the incident have been circulating on Facebook and online discussion forum Reddit since late on Sunday night.

Spots of blood can be seen next to the man, who is sitting on the ground next to the seat of a chair that appears to have fallen apart from its base. A younger man is seen applying something to the back of the victim's head, presumably to stop him from bleeding.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it received a call for medical assistance at Block 409 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 11pm.

A man was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the SCDF said.

The Straits Times understands that he had minor head injuries.

In response to queries, the Ang Mo Kio Town Council said on Monday that it was alerted to the incident on Sunday night and is investigating.

"We have not been able to establish the identity of the elderly man but we are doing all we can to reach out to his family members," a town council spokesman said.

The spokesman said that all the chairs at the hawker centre, numbering close to 600, and tables are currently being checked to ensure that they are secure and meet standard safety requirements.

"Each seat is secured to the metal base using four screws as well as 'max bond' glue," the spokesman added.

The incident happened just two days after Teck Ghee Square market and hawker centre reopened after two months' closure.

The centre was shut from April 1 to May 31 for repair, redecoration and upgrading works, according to an announcement by the town council on Facebook in March.

On Monday, the town council spokesman said that the contractor has been mobilised on site to rectify any issues as well as ensure that table and chairs are secure by the same day.

Shoddy workmanship. Who was the one who selected the contractor? Who was the one who approved the completed work? Who did the inspection? So now town council trying to kill sinkies?

SINGAPORE: Ang Mo Kio Town Council is investigating after a 70-year-old man fell off a newly-installed hawker centre chair and was taken to hospital, 8world News reported.

The incident happened on Sunday (Jun 2) night at Teck Ghee Square hawker centre - the second day of the hawker centre's re-opening after renovations, according to the report.

The man was having a meal when his seat suddenly came off the base, causing him to fall backwards and hurt his head, the report added. He was eventually taken to hospital.

Workers could be seen fixing the chairs at Teck Ghee Square hawker centre on Jun 3, 2019.

The hawker centre's chairman Tan Wen Xin said customers had complained that a few chairs had fallen off their bases. He told 8world News he believed the old man had sat on one such chair after other customers had put back a loose seat.

The town council told the news outlet that the hawker centre's chairs and tables have to adhere to safety standards, and that each chair is secured with adhesive and four screws.

A photo of the incident circulating on social media shows an elderly man sitting on the ground, with another man holding a towel to the back of his head.

1. It was very obvious there are 4 holes on the metal plate

2. It is also very obvious there are no screws as its not possible for all 4 screws to be missing from this accident scene

3. Even if there are screws a few screws should still be on the metal plate with torn wood from the seat, so there are no screws

4. Maxbond or its solvent based adhesives are the most popular construction adhesive being use today (Maxbond is a trade name belongs to HB Fuller company).

5. When you renovate your home you will notice especially the carpenter using it so very often as if everything can be stick with Maxbond.

6. Another thing you notice about Maxbond is its smell some people can get migraine from this smell. When you move into your new home it stinks from Maxbond smell if it had been used excessively. The smell comes from solvents. (by the way Maxbond is highly flammable and considered a dangerous product in transport)

7. Most of this type of Maxbond glue has more than 10% of solvent. When the glue cures the solvent will disappear (evaporated) this presents 2 problems

a. the original volume will be reduced by at least 10% with the loss of solvent and this loss of volume is seen as shrinkage reducing surface contact as well during the curing stage causing loss of adhesive strength.

b. solvents evaporated in the form of volatile organic compound (VOC) and it stays in the immediate environment, VOC is not healthy and most are carcinogenic. The bad smell is VOC that you are breathing into your body.

8. For a seat where people sit (apply pressure) and get out of the seat (reduce pressure) is considered dynamic load, Maxbond alone is not capable of handling dynamic loads.

For your daily use of construction adhesives please choose hybrid adhesives which is usually low VOC products that qualifies Green Building requirement of less than 4% VOC. Most of these hybrid adhesives also don't smell as it does not contain solvents consequently its almost 100% solid (compare with less than 90% solid from Maxbond type of products) making the hybrid adhesive non-shrink giving stronger adhesion. Also most of these hybrid adhesives have some flexibility to allow some dynamic loads.

This is Maxbond I believe most of you have seen it before

agree. your screws would have helped secure the seat to the leg. the glue is secondary and should not be the primary (and only) securing mechanism.
