CSM will not meet the qualification for EP. No opposition politician past or present meets the qualifying criteria. The potential is going to be very small. The Govt will have persuade their candidates of choice early and groom him. Nathan has already given them fair indication that there are others like him who consider it a "duty" to the nation.

Chen is unlikely to remain in a position where there is little or no hope. He would better off standing as an independent if he has to leave WP. SDP baggage is not worth the trouble. It is also common knowledge that Chee has tight control and people of substance have left the party with exception of PT after each and every election. Note there is no Chinese of sufficient stature in SDP. Quite a feat when Chinese make up 70% over of the population.

For the long-term good of Singapore and Singaporeans, I think a merger of the WP and the SDP will definitely form a formidable dream opposition team.
In my opinion, CSM and CSJ will complement each other very well. CSM's "Chinese-ness" and CSJ's "English-ness" combined will form a very balanced team.

Circulation of speeches is common sense so as to ensure that there is no duplication, no deviation from the subject at hand. On major issue, MPs are given specific area to cover and they then draft out there speeches. Suggestion will flow, amendments are made.
Go read Chen maiden speech and he has never deviated from his style both in subsequent speeches in Parliament or elsewhere. I am actually amazed that the Party did not do more to address his issue. None of his speeches comes close to any from his colleagues or any main stream optician in Singapore or elsewhere.

No one will believe that Chen would wilt in front of LTK as you claimed. In fact he challenged him during the last CEC. Its obvious that there is a rift but Chen blindly having his speeches vetted by LTK and asked to deliver it is truly far fetched. I am also sure that other MPs in the WP would have intervened or walked out of the Party if the claims by you are indeed correct. All political leaders have a strong element of control because it is the nature of politics and it can be ruthless but not the way you have described. Especially when it comes to Chen who also does not need the money from what he has accomplished.

No one said anything about wilting; you did. You either stick with party discipline, no matter how draconian, leave the party or challenge the party leadership. When things are hunky dory, you stay on. When you lose your ward, the knives come out, the blame game starts, you make your move.
