Hours later, two more explosives were set off around the capital Colombo. One of them was triggered near a hotel in a suburb south of Colombo, killing two people, another was apparently set off by a suicide bomber looking to avoid capture in a safehouse in a northern neighborhood of the capital. In total, over 200 people were killed in the attacks on Sunday, including 35 foreign nationals, according to Sri Lankan police.
Many of the 35 foreigners killed in the blasts were at the hotels, officials said.
The Taprobane restaurant at the hotel was having one of its busiest days of the year for the Easter holiday weekend.
“It was 8:30 a.m., and it was busy. It was families,” the manager told AFP.
“He came up to the top of the queue and set off the blast,” he added. “One of our managers who was welcoming guests was among those killed instantly.”
The bomber also died. Parts of his body were found intact by police and taken away.

Other hotel officials told how the bomber, a Sri Lankan, checked in giving an address that turned out to be false, saying he was in the city for business.

The country’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, said he feared the violence could trigger instability in the country and its economy.
Sri Lanka’s most senior Catholic figure, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, called on the government to find the attackers behind the deadly blasts and “punish them mercilessly because only animals can behave like that.”
‘Shock, grief and mourning’
“There was utter chaos, but we rushed all the injured to hospital in a very short time,” the Cinnamon Grand manager said. “About 20 people were seriously wounded and we sent them to the National Hospital.”
The hotel is close to the Sri Lankan prime minister’s official residence and Special Task Force commandos were quickly at the scene.
At the Shangri-La, witnesses said they heard two loud blasts and that staff reported some people had been killed. But details of the toll were not immediately given.
An AFP photographer saw extensive damage in the second floor restaurant at the hotel, with windows blown out and electrical wires hanging from the ceiling.
The Shangri-La said in a statement that the bomb hit at approximately 9:00 a.m. local time at its Table One restaurant.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the casualties and those who have been affected,” it said.
“Our immediate priority is to look after the safety and wellbeing of all involved. A Shangri-La crisis management team has been activated to provide all necessary support.”

President Donald Trump botched his initial statement about the deadly bombings in Sri Lanka on Sunday morning, tweeting that the death toll was in the hundreds of millions.
“Heartfelt condolences from the people of the United States to the people of Sri Lanka on the horrible terrorist attacks on churches and hotels that have killed at least 138 million people and badly injured 600 more. We stand ready to help!” Trump wrote in a tweet that was left up for at least 20 minutes before he corrected the number to 138, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter.
Before noticing the error and taking the tweet down, Trump then tweeted to wish the country a “Happy Easter.”
Trump’s condolences come in the wake of a brutal series of bombings at luxury hotels and churches in Sri Lankan cities of Colombo, Negombo, and Batticaloa on Easter Sunday. The latest reported death count estimated that 207 people had been killed in the blasts.
Police have made a handful of arrests, according to CNN, but no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Early Sunday morning, before his tweets about Easter and the Mueller report, President Trump expressed condolences to families of the victims of the Sri Lanka explosions — and grossly overstated the death toll.
“Heartfelt condolences from the people of the United States to the people of Sri Lanka on the horrible terrorist attacks on churches and hotels that have killed at least 138 million people and badly injured 600 more,” Trump tweeted. “We stand ready to help!”
As of 2018, the population of Sri Lanka was around 22 million.
More than 200 people have died in the coordinated explosions, which struck churches and hotels on Easter Sunday in three cities. About 450 are injured.
Early estimates reported by news outlets put the death toll at 137.
Within an hour, the president deleted the incorrect tweet and sent a new one: “138 people have been killed in Sri Lanka, with more that 600 badly injured, in a terrorist attack on churches and hotels. The United States offers heartfelt condolences to the great people of Sri Lanka. We stand ready to help!” he wrote.
Trump’s response to the explosions in Sri Lanka was the first thing he tweeted about Sunday morning. The president has faced criticism for his response to tragedies, sometimes for the content of his statements, but more often it is his omissions and delayed responses that invite criticism.
After the attack New Zealand mosques on March 15, in which 50 people were allegedly killed by a white supremacist during Friday services, Trump was criticized for initially spending much of his time on Twitter that weekend attacking rivals, retweeting conspiracy theorists and condemning the press rather than addressing the attack perpetrated against Muslims. Several days later, he tweeted that the the “Fake News Media is working overtime to blame me for the horrible attack in New Zealand.”

Critics also questioned why the Notre Dame fire in Paris garnered a total of four tweets last week and a pledge of support to France from the President, while three black churches that burned in Louisiana weeks earlier went unacknowledged on the commander-in-chief’s feed. Authorities say the three churches, which burned within 10 days of each other in the same parish, were deliberately set ablaze by a white man they have charged with arson and hate crimes.
In the most notable instance, Trump drew widespread criticism for his response to the Charlottesville, Va., protests in 2017, in which white supremacists clashed with counter protesters in a melee that left one woman dead. The President initially blamed “many sides” and “both sides” for the violence, contradicting official White House statements that specifically condemned white supremacy, Neo-Nazis and the Klu Klux Klan. Politicians from both parties blasted the president for his remarks.
