France's centre-forward Olivier Giroud did not score any goals and had only 1 assist, but won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Strangely, his role as a physical target man was somehow considered essential by his manager Didier Deschamps. Giroud started 6 of France's 7 games, but his hold-up play to create space for Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe was deemed to be of utmost importance.

Target man some are not use as goal scorer. They also can defend set pieces which is valuable. They are easier to set up attack and if opposition team park bus, they can still head ball and hold up ball etc.

Another target man who could not hit the target was Emile Heskey for England. He made 62 appearances, but scored only 7 goals. His physical strength, unselfish play and ability to hold up the ball was valued by Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello; it brought quicker forwards and midfielders into the attack.
