Casinos don't ruin anyone as millions of people gamble without ruining their lives at all. It's a form of entertainment and as long as you set a limit to your spending, it's no different from going on a shopping spree once in a while.

People ruin themselves. If they indulge in criminal acts in order to feed an addiction, they only have themselves to blame.

Maybe you should talk to Mencius mother "This saying refers to the legend that Mencius' mother moved house three times before finding a location that she felt was suitable for the child's upbringing. As an expression, the idiom refers to the importance of finding the proper environment for raising children.
Mencius's father died when he was very young. His mother Zhǎng (仉) raised her son alone. They were very poor. At first they lived by a cemetery, where the mother found her son imitating the paid mourners in funeral processions. Therefore the mother decided to move. The next house was near a market in the town. There the boy began to imitate the cries of merchants (merchants were despised in early China). So the mother moved to a house next to a school. Inspired by the scholars and students, Mencius began to study. His mother decided to remain, and Mencius became a scholar." from wipipedia

The CaSINoes are approved "temptation"...if they can ban chewing gums, which is a social menace, they can ban the caSINoes...what sort of compasses are these people are using when they approve them??

Of course, it is always the individual, who does not know that...

Posted on 29 Jul 2012 4 jailed for cheating MBS casino of $150,000

SOURCE: The Straits Times

A specialist army officer colluded with four accomplices and cheated Marina Bay Sands of nearly $150,000 in July and August last year. Now suspended from duty, Toh Kaida, 29, was jailed for two years on Friday.

When he pleaded guilty early this month, the court heard that the mastermind was Ho Boon Keat, 29, who was then working at the casino as a surveillance operator. When he was on duty, his accomplices would stake out the Sic Bo tables. In this game, three dice are rolled. Gamblers can win up to 180 times their bet if all the dice display the same number.

In the scam, an accomplice would claim to have placed a $25 bet after a triple appeared. The pit manager would call Ho to check video footage for confirmation. Ho would lie and say the bet had been placed.

Pleading for leniency on behalf on Toh, defence counsel Josephus Tan said that Toh had made restitution of $10,000 to the casino, which was his share of the criminal proceeds. Three other accomplices have also been dealt with. Ho was sentenced to three years in jail while ex-specialist officer Ang Chee Peng, 28, received 2 1/2 years. Former truck driver Benson Ho, 25, was jailed one year and two months.

The case against the fifth accomplice, Bai Qipei, 24, a deliveryman, will be heard next month. He too will be pleading guilty.

Posted on 11 May 2012 Ex-MBS video operator jailed for cheating casino of $150,000

He was the eyes of the casino, monitoring security footage to make sure nothing suspicious was afoot. But video surveillance operator Ho Boon Keat, 29, colluded with four accomplices and cheated Marina Bay Sands out of nearly $150,000.

Now unemployed, the 29-year-old was jailed for three years on Friday.

Court papers state that when Ho was on duty, his accomplices would check out the Sic Bo tables. In this game, three dice are rolled. Gamblers can win up to 180 times their original bet if all three of a certain number appear.

The scam involved an accomplice claiming to have placed a $25 bet after a triple had appeared. The pit manager of the table would call Ho to check video footage for confirmation and Ho would lie and say that the bet had been placed.

As such, he helped to deceive the pit managers 33 times between July 16 and Aug 14 last year so that his alleged accomplices - two of whom are Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) specialists- could pocket the winnings.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavitha Kandesan had urged the court to impose a four-year jail sentence as this was the first case of a video surveillance operator abusing the trust of his employer by colluding with patrons to cheat the casino.

She also said that Ho had damaged the integrity and reputation of Singapore.

In reply, Ho's lawyer Subhas Anandan said that there was no evidence that the country's reputation had been tarnished as people were still flocking to the casino.

Mr Anandan also highlighted that Ho had made restitution of about $50,000, which was his share of the criminal proceeds.

In passing sentence, District Judge Eddy Tham noted that 'the genesis and the success of the scam clearly depended on Ho, who played a pivotal role.

The judge also agreed with the prosecution that collusion between casino employees and patrons were hard to detect and were one of the duties of surveillance operators at the casino.

Posted on 04 Jan 2013 Cabby jailed, caned for attempted robbery and harassment

cabby_jailed_caned_for_attempted_robbery_and_harassment-thumbnail.jpg

SOURCE: Straits Times Online

A cabby hooked on gambling, went from borrowing from loan sharks to armed robbery and to harassing other debtors.

Melvin Ong Hwee Ann was sentenced on Friday to nine years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane.

A district court heard that Ong, 38, a Premier Taxi cabby, would frequent the casino at Resorts World Sentosa.

To fuel his gambling habit, he went on a borrowing spree from loan sharks. When they demanded payment, he tried to rob British housewife Karen Louise Holland at knife point in the car park of Tanglin Mall at 4.40pm on July 29 last year.

The 46-year-old British national was with her 13-month-old son and seven-year-old daughter. Another motorist walking by threw four $50 notes on the floor and told Ong to take that money instead but the cabby persisted in trying to grab the handbag that was in the car.

He also tried to drive her vehicle away and in the struggle, Ms Holland suffered a 2cm-long cut on the waist. It was only when a security officer came to her aid, did Ong grab the $200 on the floor and run off.

About a week later, he started harassing other debtors of the loan sharks in an attempt to pay off his loans. Using his taxi to drive to his victims' homes, he splashed paint or locked the metal gates and scribbled graffiti on 129 occasions throughout the island in August alone. He was paid between $70 and $120 for each flat and the money went to offset his loans.

Posted on 17 Aug 2012 Ex-croupier jailed 11 weeks for overpaying accomplice $3,050

excroupier_jailed_11_weeks_for_overpaying_accomplice_3050-thumbnail.jpg

SOURCE: The Straits Times

A croupier at the Marina Bay Sands casino overpaid an accomplice a total of $3,000 in casino chips on top of her winnings of $200 in four games.

A sharp-eyed surveillance operator manning the video monitor, however, grew suspicious at the haste in which the patron grabbed her winnings off the baccarat table.

Video footage of the table was scrutinised and it showed what Ho Kee Hwa was up to on July 28, 2011.

On Thursday, the 42-year-old former croupier was sentenced to 11 weeks’ jail. He pleaded guilty to committing criminal breach of trust of $3,050.

A district court heard that Ho had overpaid $50 to another accomplice at a blackjack table a month earlier.

On July 28, 2011, Ho was on-duty at a baccarat table. Ms Chong, 43, arrived at 1.50am and started placing $50 bets.

Video footage showed that at 2.04am, she won her bet and he handed her a $1,000 chip together with two $25 chips. Ten minutes later, he overpaid her with a $500 chip.

By 2.26pm, he had handed her another $500 and $1,000 chip in addition to her winnings of $100. They were caught soon after.

Past video footage was then reviewed and it showed Ho overpaying Mr Chwee Wai Leong, 41, when he won $50 while playing blackjack at 6.53am on June 15, 2011.

The case against Mr Chwee and Mr Chong has not come to court.

I am not for gambling and believe it a personal choice. Also notice that gambling is not considered a "bad" norm or practice by Singaporeans (or should I say, the Chinese race). I wouldn't blame PAP for allowing it, it's not their fault and actually, I'd fault them if they disallowed it as that is interfering into people's choice. Even as young boys, we played picture cards and marbles, which is gambling too.

It's up to the person him/herself to participate or not.

Cheers!

It's a social disease like smoking or drinking.

Maybe when oil becomes really scarce or ships begin to bypass the Straits of Malacca for a shorter alternative sea route, all that refinery and petrochemical industry infrastructure can be demolished and Jurong Island will be converted into a casino island resort.

And Sinkies living in the western part of Sinkieland can look forward to an integrated resort at their doorstep!

Mahjong anyone?

The muslims use the same line of reasoning when they force their women to dress like this to remove temptation from the environment.

I suggest you get your female relatives to do the same. After all, you can't blame the rapist if your daughter was walking around bra less in a spaghetti top and a mini skirt when she was ravished by 10 Banglas. She had it coming.

The 60.1% will only be willing to vote against the pappies if it was their own family members who suffered or were ruined.
You're not gonna find anyone in the 60.1% who vote against pappies if they read stories of others suffering, hahaha........................

And btw, neither Chia Teck Leng (formerly of APB) nor Tan Cheng Yew (formerly a lawyer) was ruined by pap's casinoes.
They gambled in overseas casinoes.
If they were born a few years later, maybe they would have been.

hmm, IMHO, as long as you have to make a choice with money such as investing, it is also classified as gambling.
