I believe Leongsam was already a multi-millionaire with at least two investment properties and substantial equity in a million dollar business when he left for Perth. Trouble is he thinks everyone can replicate his success. To start with, the kind of capital appreciation the 70s and 80s generation experienced in property can never be repeated again, not with our current demographics, size of economy, saturation point reached, etc. And if you want to talk about building a brick and mortar business like he did, well Singapore is no longer a good place for that. Better opportunities to be found elsewhere. That is why the young should emigrate.

rubbish the best time to make a big buck is this century,where a million means nothing,billionaires pop out like candy,and any tom dick and harry can drive a bmw or mercedes...yes i believe business entrepreneurship is a extremely risky venture with a huge luck factor but most people build their wealth from other ways,namely rental seeking and passive investment.....the most important factor in wealth expansion today is the internet,thanks to internet any tom dick and harry can have access to the stock market real time when in the past u had to be somebody with means to have access to brokers and the stock market....also there a myriad of other ways to build wealth like blog shops,online marketing and online poker and whatnot....all of which require very little input and infinite output.

Suffice it to say, the next generation (those under 30yo as of TODAY) is going to find it much harder to get wealthy as compared to the previous generation. There are two simple reason for this is: asset valuations are so much higher compared to one generation ago, and the globalization/innovation cycle is flattening out. That is why the young must migrate to countries where there the economy & land has abundant & untapped carrying capacity. Singapore is a prime example where the carrying capacity has been reached.

Otherwise, the other way is to try to load up on the obvious stocks like Facebook, Google, biotech & healthcare stocks, energy stocks, etc, and hope.

I see too many economic storms on the horizon that will last until at least past 2030. Perhaps worth putting into a separate thread.

I said, "let's do it". The rest said that it was too dangerous and we'd get caught in no time. So I said, "let's do it from some other country where it is safe.".

All of them said "good idea blah blah blah....".

A year and a half later I was on my way to Perth. The rest couldn't be bothered to uproot themselves.

The rest of that group were all smarter than I am. I guess that was their problem. They were smart enough to decide it wasn't worthwhile. I was ignorant.
