RACE EIGHT, RATED 80-60 (C3), 1,000 METRES

Free And Easy has done some fluent pieces with Olivier Doleuze and he looks much sharper than last season. Team Work showed good heart in his trial win last Tuesday and his work has been up to mark as well. Windicator Returns has been stretching out powerfully, clocking brisk times. He looks a treat. Multiproud has been showing a lot of zest during the break and his trial effort 12 days ago was a good indicator that he has overcome his injury setbacks well.

RACE FOUR, RATED 40-15 (C5), 1,650 METRES
Grand General is well graded now and he trialled nicely for Zac Purton 12 days ago. Happy Cha Cha wasn't asked to do anything in his trial 12 days ago but his work has been right up to the mark. Healthy Contender has had a full schedule of work and she stretched out beautifully with Derek Cruz at the end her 800m piece last Thursday and on Monday with Darren Beadman. Humongus has been coming along nicely with series of 1,200m exercises and he looks a gem.

Just had dinner with a VIP and was told over the weekend week an indonesia high roller has surpass fallen idiot Henry Quek loss of $31million..tat indon lost $40million.
Clown Henry Quek still owe RWS $11million..neg to out of court settlement is still on going....another football and horse kingpin has double up his lost to $10million..many of these high rollers i would say fall for the charm of RWS head of marketing dept Mabel Lee who single handed with his PR skill slayed these high roller mercilessly...she is the rose of RWS...a big pay rise is expected soon for a job well done..

Indonesian tycoon Hassan recently lost his $40m at MBS and not at RWS.

To all bros, let us not envy those high rollers who have lost millions at the casino...i have seen many rich sporeans in the casino and i dun care how much they lose or win and i am not jealous of their riches...sometimes i feel these jerks can put their riches to better use like visiting the old folks home, the salvation army orphanage chidren home or poor folks tat may need financial help...you noe something like buying food and clothing for them instead of spending time in the casino...to be honest..most of them tat i knowof have not done anything at all to help the poor..it doesnt mean he is a nice guy just buy tipping the server $500..he tip because he is fithy rich and is in a good mood... nice guys are those tat has make it in life and decide to give something small back to society.

Are we surprised at what's going on in the two casinos? At the reprecussions as the result of the IRs? It's sad to see people losing their life-savings but at the same time, I don't think we are surprised with all these. The only way is to avoid going to casions - whether it's in Singapore or elsewhere.

Bro Psalm23..thanks for your posting,i ve since stop posting on my casino thread on seeing so many casaulties and families being torn apart.
too bad the casino is already here and will be for many years, there is both good and bad in it too...the casino did help improve spore economy abit, more jobs are being available, taxi and transport ridership as gone up...there are now more buzz in spore than ever before as can be seen..i hope that this two casino can do their part on charity causes or giving some back to society.
before the casino open many sporeans went to the cruiseships to gamble,it was always pack during weekend and these operators has been making so much moneys from foolish gamblers and none of them the operators have given or donate to charitable organisation at all.

"Citing a number of analysts, the Straits Times claims that the bulk of the gamblers at the two casinos are Singaporean citizens and permanent residents, who have to pay a S$100 ($72) daily or S$2,000 ($1,435) annual levy to play the tables" - [Report]
.
"It is believed that the victim lost a huge sum of money amounting to some S$70,000 at a casino last week, which resulted in his act of suicide.....", ST May 2010.[Link]

"The reason for the attempt of suicide is still unknown, probably because the victim owed debts or suffered huge losses in casinos like previous reports of similar suicide cases"

ST April 2010[Link]

"...15 percent of Singapore problem gamblers have attempted suicide, "

I'm sure not many of you will feel sorry for the rich feller who lost $26M at the casino recently. The media reported that the married high roller who turned up at RWS with a girlfriend lost this massive amount over a period of 3 days. There are several things to learn from the story. People can lose control at the casino and gamble away their lifesavings. You cannot count on the casino to limit the social costs of its existence because a large part of its profits comes from problem gamblers. For every Henry Quek (the chap who lost $26M), there are hundreds, if not thousands, of ordinary Joes who lost more than they can affort and whose families have to suffer the effects of those losses.

I read a brokerage report on Genting early this year . The analyst rated the stock a sell because he believed investors are overly optimistic about Genting prospects and his back of the envelope calculation showed little chance of Genting breaking even this year. Boy was he wrong! Genting reported blockbuster profits of $396M in the latest quarter and revenues of $860M[Link]. If this continues Genting will report profits in excess of $1B for the whole year. This is performance far exceeded the highest expectations of analysts that cover the company. The govt will be collecting plenty of corporate tax from Genting and its shareholders are cheering the success of the company. But who pays the price?

The high profits of Genting means that its casino is filled everyday by gamblers. It is not known how many are Singaporeans, like Henry Quek and how many are foreigners. There is plenty of harm to go around. I don't think you should be too happy even if some of the profits come from foreigners. It is not good to have foreign workers who are supposed to be here to earn a living and better their lives back home to lose money at the casino. We have seen quite a few crimes committed by people who lost money at the casino.

We were told the main benefit the casino is to create jobs for Singaporeans (not tax revenue for the govt?) but if you visit the casino, many of the jobs are taken up by foreigners and this whole thing about job creation may be a farce because Singapore has to import foreigners to fill many of the jobs available. The real problem is with structural unemployment among older workers which is linked to the large number of younger workers employers are able to import instead of employing older workers.

You notice how quiet the Singapore’s National Council On Problem Gambling (NCPG) is in recent months. When was the last time you saw an anti-gambling ad? Given what is going on at the casinos, the NCPG should be doing its job to tell Singaporeans about the harm of casino gambling and run an anti-casino gambling campaign. The NCPG has a paltry annual budget of $2.5M (vs Genting's $396M quarterly profits) - this money is probably not even enough to buy the free drinks and snacks the RWS gives out at its casino to attract gamblers. This govt is not serious about solving the problem of gambling. The NCPG was formed in 2005 only to reduce the resistance towards having casinos.... looking at Genting's huge revenue and profits, do you think things are under control?

(SINGAPORE) The Singapore government has told Las Vegas Sands to ensure that not more than 30 per cent of all visitors to its casino at Marina Bay Sands are Singaporean, a top company executive revealed.
'We are basically told that as long as only about 30 per cent of the people coming in are Singaporean, then it shouldn't be a problem. If the amount of Singaporean attendance gets much higher than that, there may be some cause for concern,' Michael Leven, Las Vegas Sands president and chief operating officer, said.
That 30 per cent figure isn't published, he said in an interview last week with Inside Asian Gaming. 'That's what our numbers have been, roughly 30 per cent Singaporean. That doesn't seem to cause any problem.'
To this day, only about 3 per cent of Singapore's population has ever played in a casino, he said.
But a spokesman with the Ministry of Community Development did not confirm the 30 per cent cap, saying only that 'the IR operators have been told very clearly that the casinos are tourist products and they are not to target the domestic market'.
In response to speculation that the Singapore government may further limit local access to casinos, Mr Leven said that the company hasn't had problems with the 30 per cent cap, but doesn't rule out the possibility of more intervention.
'You're always going to have in the casino business some people who overplay. That's part of the business, but the great majority of people can control themselves and I don't think we're creating more poverty in Singapore because of our presence. But if that were to happen, the government would have every right and every reason to come in and try to restrict play.'
But he said that Sands needed local gamblers in order to support its investment in integrated resorts. 'We have to have some local play in order to be consistent when we don't have conventions and we don't have tourists. Otherwise, you've got an awful lot of overhead sitting there not generating any revenue.'
While the $100 entry levy hasn't deterred locals from going to the casino, Mr Leven said that he believes the fee does prevent the very low income person from coming in.
'I think casinos need to be careful not to attract the kind of people that can't afford to come in. The people who would normally play a lottery, for instance, where they can play pennies or dollars,' he said.
'But I think when you come into a large casino like ours or Genting, the fee structure only inhibits those low-end people. It doesn't inhibit people from coming in for an evening of entertainment. So I like it.
'Frankly, I would be surprised, if we expand in other countries in Asia, that we don't have an entry fee in almost every country, if not every country.'
In discussions with governments in Japan, South Korea and Vietnam - countries targeted by Sands for potential gaming expansion - Mr Leven said that there were political reasons why certain constituencies have concerns about local gaming.
'So they begin to see the virtue of our system because our system drives tourists and drives conventions and meetings and entertainment and builds an enormous amount of jobs,' he said.
While Sands rival Genting Singapore has managed to hang on to the lion's share of the gaming market in Singapore because of its contacts in Malaysia and aggressive wooing of VIP highrollers, Mr Leven said that MBS has caught up in the mass market segment, which Sands expects to dominate in Singapore.
'In the early days, Genting won both the market share game in VIP gaming as well as mass market. We are now winning the mass market game and they continue to lead in the VIP game for a variety of reasons.
'On the VIP end, they're more aggressive than we've been and doing a better job. But they had a headstart on us because of all their contacts in Malaysia. And we'll eventually catch up and probably that market will be split, but I think we'll continue to dominate the mass market.'
But Mr Leven also acknowledged picking up a few tips on its mass market floor strategy from Genting Singapore.
'The mass market floor in Singapore constantly changes. One of the things we learned from Genting was the electronic table games, which they put, and the stadium table games. We didn't know about that. We saw that there and we immediately ordered them and put them in. They've been very good,' he said.
Sands has made over 2,000 changes in the past six months on its MBS gaming floor: changing slot machines and other electronic gaming machines, tables, and putting in new games, he said.
'Most people don't realise that there is both an art and science to the gaming business. It's not just getting people in there to play. You have to put the right game in the right place so that revenue per square foot is maximised,' he said.
