NEW DELHI: Singapore-based mobile phone company SingTel, that owns 32% in India's largest telecom company, Bharti Airtel, on Tuesday denied allegations leveled against it by India's federal probe agency.

In a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange, SingTel said that no official charges had been brought against the company but it would continue to assist Indian authorities and will offer its full cooperation.

"According to media reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India has registered a case against SingTel, together with two other Indian telcos, for allegedly providing international long-distance services to Indian customers without a licence. No official charges have been brought against SingTel. SingTel denies and will actively defend itself against the allegation.

As a long-term strategic investor, SingTel respects and conducts its business according to applicable laws in the countries it operates in. SingTel is renowned for its high corporate governance and transparency standards. It has been assisting the relevant Indian authorities in preliminary enquiries and will continue to render its full co-operation," the company said.

The CBI had registered a case on charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act against Singapore Telecommunications, Bharti AirtelBSE 2.91 % and Tata Communication on the complaint of the telecom department for causing a loss of .`48 crore to the exchequer.

"It was alleged that the Singapore-based firm was providing International Long Distance services to Indian customers and directly raising invoices on them for the services provided, in conspiracy with two private telecommunication firms based at Gurgaon and Mumbai since 2004. The Singapore-based firm was not legally authorised to raise such invoices," the CBI had said on Monday.

Tata CommunicationsBSE -0.36 % spokesperson on Monday said in a statement that it had not violated any of the terms of the ILD licence in India and has taken all steps to ensure that its actions are in conformity with the licence provisions. <META name=cmsei content=cms.next>

You watch... all of Singtel's overseas subsidiaries will come crumbling down like a house of cards.

India is one of the most protectionist countries ...why the PAP morons thought it was a good idea to have a free-trade agreement with this country defies me?
In FTA, there are often the big talk of trade potentials and how many thousands in job creation and bump in GDP ....in reality, someone has to lose.
In our FTA with India, we are the big losers. They export hundreds of thousand of their cheap labour to sinkapore. These cheap coolies make more money in sinkapore and remit most of it home. What does sinkapore get in return - layoffs of local PMET.

Pee-a-pee bargain with India gahmen:

You let me have a piece of pie, I let your people come Singapore to work.
