singaporean health

I used to live in kampong and I saw how to inject a capsule into a chick and how fast the chick balloon to size of goose in 3 months ! Nowaday , it is hard to find healthy food because you never know how it is farm. Farmer find all sort of way to shorten the harvest time to maximise profit, that is just like Singapore , always looking for short-cut and fast result. :)

I can't help to comment, chicken today is different from chicken in older days- mainly feeding n injection. Veg now if less nutritious compare to the past -overcultivation

The injection is filled with hormones & antibiotics.

The hormones can be dangerous. I remember reading about how males developed breasts because they ate chickens with high amounts of hormones.

The over use of antibiotics among chickens, cattle,...humans cause bacteria to develop an immunity to antibiotics, resulting in the increase of "super bugs", These are diseases resistant to antibiotics.

Our neighbours wouldn't complain. They also keep live duck and chicken.

Ahh, the old days when the kampong spirit was still alive :)

However nowadays you have a less tolerant society. Only have to look at all the trivial complaints brought up by STOMPERS.

I prefer grandma style chicken though not available nowadays. Kept as little chick and fed to grow to become fat chicken, then slaughter, cook and eat. Nobody mess with aunties those days. They were more skilful with knives and blades then most men.

The nice Spore veggies you see in the supermarkets are grown in the air using hydroponics. Veggies grown in this way aren't as nutritious as those grown the old fashioned way. The soils contain a more diverse range of nutrients that a cost conscious businessman cannot afford to emulate :(

You can still find kampong chickens in Indonesia & Malaysia, but quite expensive because it takes so much longer to rear.

Some restaurants actually adverise that some dishes use them, they are of course more expensive.

The crux is in all the sauces we eat. Probably starters can go for food without sauces.

Example eat chap chye perng, don't put sauce on rice. Most sauces are derived from animal fats which came during cooking, consisting of sugar, salt in excess. Even salad dressing can be fatty as some though use low fat dressing, but they add in extra ingredients to make the salad dressing taste more appetising.
You're right about the sauces.
Nowadays, when I eat chap chye png, I always decline the sauce when they ask.
If we eat a meal of green vegetables, a meat or fish and a toufu or long bean dish for example, there's probably a lot of sauce already from the meat and toufu dish.
Putting more curry or soy sauce on the rice is excesssive.

Thai or Malaysian rice is unpalatable without braised sauce or curry or at least some soup. Japanese or Californian rice is OK plain.

Heart problem is one of the most common problems Sporeans face. Suggest people go to the Public Librarty and read the following book:

Reverse Heart Disease Now
Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., James C.Roberts, M.D. with Martin Zucker

I'm recommending this book to people because:
Dr. Sinatra has alot of medical experience dealing with heart cases
Its available free at the public library. Saw it at the Bishan branch.
Easy to read
It provides information on how you can add supplements like CoQ10, magnesium, L-Arginine, L-Carnitine, Nattokinase, etc, even if you are on medication.

He also has a website:
http://www.drsinatra.com/health-newsletter/

You might be interested in reading his free blog site. I don't know about his paid newsletter since I don't subscribe since there's alot of free info available elsewhere. For example:

braised sauce is a combination of salt, sesame oil, sugar and animal fats. Those sauces comprise from the fats that leak out from the skins and fats around meats. It's ok to eat meats but not the fats.

curry is worst. coconut milk combined with above.

Actually its ok to eat occasionally but judging from the common crowd eating chap chai perng 3 times a week, that would be x3.

Healthy eating can be found in hawker centre food, just that we chose to go for the unhealthy alternative.

ok thank all for their invaluable contribution...really try to leave out the sauce when eating chap chey peng, but then again, unless you have those water broiler at home (for tcm herbs, not slow cooker), the heat we use is usually wrong (too hot) and as a result the fats and blood from meat also breaks down and goes into the soup (hence the wonderful flavour...how ironic), yes raw salad (usu lettuce, tomatoes base) with lemon juice or bacon bits or even ham or hard boiled eggs is better (no oil, less salt, mostly natural), try a oil-less or hawker-less diet for 2 weeks and feel the difference...need menu planning just email me...

now let the discussion be on health tonics, ginseng, cordyceps and the ex tcm stuff...any bros ever tried or is currently trying and can feel improved effects? I took cordyceps when young for a few years due to asthma, really great and it helps a lot (was also one of the better national runners in secondary school, could go under 17:00, best time, at Mc ritchie), however nowadays, natural cordyceps is near extinction, Eu Yang Sang selling at exoiberant prices, my relative a TCM practioner who just return from tibet also say very hard to find real cordyceps nowadays...

since cant afford cordyceps, the next to go for would be korean ginseng. Like cordyceps things that grow in the extreme cold has Yang properties whereas things that grow in the hot has Ying property, so for guys dont go and buy American Ginseng cos it is considered Ying, better use for women unless you are those who is really addicted to sex...korean ginseng is more neutral and of course much more affordable and has many health property...anyone to share their experiences?

For high cholestrol, recommended to take red rice yeast (fish oil under western vitamins, but it only raises good HDL) but i think it is not sold in SG for what? reasons...anyone knows? anyone has experiences to share with regards to TCM and high cholestrol?

I don't know why cordycepts in Spore is so expensive. Many ginseng & cordycepts products avaialble in the US at an affordable price. Just take a look at some of the prices they pay over there:eek: :

Red yeast rice is available in Spore. Have even seen a made in Spore brand. Even Watson is selling it.

If you want a cheap way of bringing down cholesterol try Vitamin B3(Niacin). It's cheaper & safer than amy medication,

thanks for the recommendation sounds really good btw you know of anything that boasts men's erection (other than viagra, cialis or horny goat weed) or can repair and stimulate nerves...

regarding high cholestrol, for those not in the know, if you ever have it and atr too lazy to make lifestyle changes, you will be put on anti-lipids such as statins, which is a drug for life...statins also make you feel lethargic...so much for the truth about government conspiring with pharmacological companies...

Long term consumption of statins will damaging your liver.
When I was in IMH, the nurses always saying to those wardees taking this medication "jee kee yeo jiat pai sin teh, mai tiam tiam jiat" :D

I thought if you're in IMH, they should be more concerned about your brain than your body. :D

Pharma companies make statin from red yeast rice.

It is a very dangerous & over prescribed drug. If you are taking it you must take CoQ10 supplements. Normally the body manufactures CoQ10 naturally but if your taking statins, it depletes the body of CoQ10.

You can find out more about the dangers of statin from here:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...20/the-truth-about-statin-drugs-revealed.aspx

One of the reason I fired my cardiologist is that he prescribed statins without also prescibing CoQ10  In fact he pooed pooed the dangers of statins

If you have erection problems it may be due to stress, tiredness or symptoms of something more serious like diabetes, a developing circulation problem i.e. heart problems, prostate problems,...

Viagara, levitra, cialis only treats the symptoms & not the true cause of the problem. Loosing weight & a healthier life style is the long term solution.

Assuming you are healthy L-arginine will increase nitric oxide production & give you viagara like affects :) You need about 3,000 to 4,000mg before you sleep & eventually you'll notice some effects. I take L-arginine for my heart problem, it really help with the angina pain. A word of warning, taking high dosages of L-arginine may cause diarhea :D

There's no magic cures. You may want to read the following article about a product called Prelox :
http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2009...function-that-Improves-Vascular-Health_01.htm

The product they are referring to is Prelox which is a combination of pycnogenol(pine bark extract) & some other herbs. I don't know if it works but you can get it here:
http://www.iherb.com/Search?kw=prelox

I did see it being sold at Nature's farm for $100+. Don't know if they still carry it:confused:

this is what the government is not telling us with regards to our national delicacies...as for imh pts, they are institutionalized, so cannot exercise, up to 50 patients in the ward, hence they develope high cholestrol and need statins, pretty much like the KFC and Mc chickens...sad

how can something that contains corn be healthy? the kfc and mc chicks and cows are corn fed thats why they are raised for quick slaughter and consumption anyway just my 2 cents...

How can corn be unhealthy? It's natural grain healthier than rice nutritionally. Rice (yes, even Japanese top quality) is mostly starchy carbohydrate that causes diabetes upon overdose. Corn is hi-fibre multi-vitamin nutritious.
