Do you continue to drive if you see a zebra crossing? She's probably thinking that if she carries the umbrella, the cars will stop for her.
That driver was probably day dreaming or on his phone. How did he not notice that woman at the pedestrian crossing carrying an umbrella in broad daylight? She's probably thinking that if she carries the umbrella, the cars will stop for her.
Jaywalking is a major problem in S'pore. Just 3 days ago, a Caucasian expat, his wife and son blatantly crossed the road at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve right in front of a car, believing that the driver had ample time to apply the brakes, which he did. If he wasn't so alert, the 3 of them would have been run over. The traffic light was green in favour of the motorists. WTF was the pedestrian thinking?

The traffic lights were clearly in the driver's favour, but he does have a duty of care to look out for jaywalkers.Do you continue to drive if you see a zebra crossing?
If the driver cannot see a woman with an umbrella in broad daylight, he won't be able to notice a zebra crossing the road blending in with those stripes on the ground.
many pedestrians cross roads without bothering to look out for traffic. they believe motorist can see them and will give way to them. some even have their earphones on and eyes glued to the handphone but this one takes the cake. she even compromised her vision with the umbrella. not saying the driver was not at fault. She's probably thinking that if she carries the umbrella, the cars will stop for her.
The umbrella was blocking her view.many pedestrians cross roads without bothering to look out for traffic. they believe motorist can see them and will give way to them. some even have their earphones on and eyes glued to the handphone but this one takes the cake. she even compromised her vision with the umbrella. not saying the driver was not at fault.
I am inclined to believe the umbrella blocked the driver's view. How was the driver to know there's a person behind the umbrella?? It could've been the wind that blew it across the road. The umbrella was blocking her view.
