Perhaps there needs to be a balance. In our World, 1st impression counts, thus many youths & teens would like to be accepted amongst peers, to have a sense of belonging, & thus the foolish pressure upon themselves & upon their parents to obtain costly material goods when they don't even need it, as less costly material goods are good enough to meet youthful needs, would save up a lot of important money for better cash flow to enhance one's own quality of life.
Even adults between the ages of 20 to 30s subscribe to materialism, spending huge sums & loans to make that important 1st impression, WITHOUT realizing that it is LASTING impressions that MATTERS. What truly MATTERS is the SUBSTANCE between one's ears. One can drive the latest model of BMW, dressed in the most expensive clothes & attire, but if that critical substance is empty, one would be treated as an air-head to be used & abused.
One can argue that when one owns expensive items, it shows refinement, taste, class & intelligence to others, as such is what it takes to reach the top, or so claimed by luxury goods advertisement. So too those whom took own loans, being thrifty at one's own health or health to others to buy such expensive items.
It takes MORE than material goods to show refinement, taste, class & intelligence to make LASTING impressions. It comes from VALUES that each Human aspires to achieve -Integrity, courage, dependability, altruism, well-being, generosity, gratitude, sustainability, etc, that would endear a Human to another & be valued & treasured for life.
1st impressions counts, but lasts only a few moments, till the moment one opens his/her mouth to reveal one's true worth & values.
