Rich people think very differently from poor and middle-class people, T. Harv Eker claims in his book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. "The number one reason most people don't get what they want is that they don't know what they want," Eker writes.
An ambitious target and a plan are crucial ingredients of financial success. Some people get rich overnight, but chances are you won't be one of them — so have the patience and commitment to carry it out.
Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world, was once quoted as saying, "I always knew I was going to be rich. I don't think I ever doubted it for a minute."
You might think that a massive mansion and luxury car are obvious signs of wealth, but the millionaire next door is more likely to be your nondescript neighbour with a beat-up sedan and modest home. Stick to a budget, make a point of spending less than you earn and stay away from credit card debt.
Even billionaires live below their means: according to Forbes.com, Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad flies coach for business, takes the bus and drives a 15-year-old Volvo.
Unless you've inherited a fortune, wealth is most often a result of hard work rather than good luck.
"Are you willing to work to work sixteen hours a day? Rich people are. Are you willing to work seven days a week and give up most of your weekends? Rich people are," says Eker.
"You will have very few, if any, close friends. You just will not have the time to nurture and sustain lots of buddy-pal relationships," Stuart Goldsmith warns in Seven Secrets of the Millionaires.
Traumatic life events like divorce, disability or a death in the family can often lead to financial ruin — it's important to shield your wealth with sufficient insurance.
Your hobby may not seem lucrative, but you're more likely to put in the work — and more likely to think big — if you're passionate about what you do.
Larry Page, co-founder of Google, thinks that it is often easier to make progress on mega-ambitious dreams. "I know that sounds completely nuts. But, since no one else is crazy enough to do it, you have little competition."
According to Eker, it isn't uncommon for rich people to be viewed as bad people: there's a perception that the 'haves' are somehow taking money from the 'have nots'.
But, he says, "successful people look at other successful people as a means to motivate themselves. [...] Modelling is one of the primary ways that people learn."
The road you want to get on is one many people have travelled before you — so talk to the millionaires that you do know. Find mentors, cheerleaders and role models among them and you'll be that much closer to success.
