SDP and the coming GE - An interesting journey

Best rally speakers I've ever heard before...

1. Lee Kuan Yew (PAP)

2. Tang Liang Hong (ex-WP)

3. Francis Seow (ex-WP)

4. JB Jeyaretnam (ex-WP)

5. Low Thia Khiang (WP)

Note: I take English speeches into consideration only. If English, Chinese and Malay trilingualism is considered, Tang Liang Hong would be the all time best overall and Lim Chin Siong would have beaten everyone else in Chinese.

Worst rally speakers I've ever heard before...

1. Bryan Lim (ex-SDP)

2. Chia Ti Lik (ex-WP)

3. Perry Tong (WP)

4. Yaw Shin Leong (WP)

5. James Gomez (ex-WP)

Your view is WP has the best and worst?

Steve Chia, the ex-NCMP who, with consent, shot artistic photos of his maid?

He should keep a low profile.

Put it this way, if his wife could forgive him, who are we to say anything?

In spite of this little blunder, his performance in parliament is pretty ok.

Had SDP boycotted GE 2006, the PAP nationwide popular votes would fall below 60%.

Methinks you jumped a bit too fast on the numbers. Even if the top scoring WP contested alone, it has only 38% vs PAP's 62%. It would not be below 60% unless only HG, PP and Aljunied are contested.

Your statement is not correct on two counts:

Firstly, statistics.

In 2006 GE, SDP contested Bukit Panjang and Sembawang. With SDP's constituencies added in, the PAP obtained 748,130 out of a total of 1,123,273 valid votes, for a percentage of 66.60%.

Without SDP's constituencies, the PAP would have obtained 596,308 out of a total of 925,514 valid votes, for a percentage of 64.43%.

So your claim that without SDP, the PAP would have fallen below 60% is way off the mark. The PAP would only have been dented slightly over 1.57%.

You forgot to take the vote swing effect into consideration if Sembawang GRC and Bukit Panjang SMC was contested by WP instead of SDP. But of course, WP isn't perfect too. Some morons actually voted PAP.

Their best hope is an aliiance of some sort. The name is quite powerful.

Singapore Democratic Party, United Singapore Democrats and Socialist Front. United Singapore Alliance (USA)? Or Singapore Democratic Alliance II?

If SDP is renamed Singapore Grand Democrats, we have SGD and USD. SF is Swiss Franc. So we have Singapore Currency Alliance.

Your statement is again wrong on two counts.

Firstly, vote swing cannot be quantified after the fact. You can only guess. Your guess is as good as mine. But to get from 66.6% to below 60% would require a vote swing of at least 3.3%, or over 37,000 of the total valid votes cast. And that's not including spoilt votes (intentional or otherwise). 37,000 is not a trivial number. It is a couple of SMCs.

Secondly, if WP had the resources they would have contested elsewhere. They chose to contest 20 seats. Again, what if they had contested more -- that again is unquantifiable after the fact.

And I haven't even started on my alcohol tonight yet. :p:biggrin::smile::eek::cool:

Try telling that to his electorate, if he ever stands for office again.

I am not judging him as an individual, but as a candidate for public office.

Yes, this is the hurdle he needs to jump across. But from the weekly outreach, he is doing quite well. We will need to do something about this past.

That memory may be fading or not but PAP has another new card - what's this chap doing here when he said he'll be quitting politics if he lost in 2006 - which he did.

If Lee Siew Choh didn't try that in 1988, he would have got in in 1991. Instead he lost another 2% in Eunos.

Please don't babber that you're migrating to Hongkong on the rally stage. Unless you really very very very very very sure you won't change your mind and will never never never never return. This is good advice.

OK, it's my guess and your guess is as good as mine, the other eventuality materalised. In any case, Sembawang is not an SMC, it's not even just another GRC, it's the biggest GRC by population in Singapore, worth about 200,000 votes.

BTW, fyi, even SPH doesn't dare to mess around with me regarding this one, I definitely don't think you have the means, money, power and guts as much as SPH. Shoo!

I will challenge you to show yourself then I will accept your challenge to sue you to your last penny. Game enough?

Well, you can try SPH. I don't mind to get more funding from SPH for my party's election campaign. I seriously need that you know! I will donate all money I get from you as well as SPH, if they are stupid enough to listen to your rubbish, to my party to finance more candidates. Thank you for helping me with this one.

I have 3 points to make:

1. If you challenge someone to sue you, identify yourself.

2. GMS is one of the most fidel and faithfully married man I've ever known.

3. The Tampines shop story was a slander concocted in the old forum when someone spying on him saw him with his sister who was assisting him in the shop.
