Why Eating Durian Causes a Sore Throat/Cancer

Many people wonder why they experience a sore throat or a sensation of "heatiness" (inflammation) after eating durians.

To protect their crops from birds and squirrels, some unscrupulous farmers treat durian flowers and soil with heavy amounts of banned pesticides. This aggressive chemical use eliminates local wildlife from the plantations. When you experience a sore throat or mild fever after eating durian, it is your body reacting to the toxic chemical residues accumulated inside the fruit.

In major producing regions like Malaysia, an estimated 99% of commercial farms rely heavily on massive doses of herbicides and pesticides. This has caused an ecological disaster, killing off local wildlife and natural undergrowth.

The trade is heavily influenced by illicit networks and syndicates that oversee everything from toxic cultivation to smuggling and retail distribution.

For a safer and healthier alternative, you can consider wild jungle durians from various parts of Indonesia. Because these fruits grow naturally without chemical interference, they do not cause throat inflammation or "heatiness."

This heaty experience happened before pesticides were used, it happens even for organically farmed durians

Durian Bukit and durian kampong but very difficult due to huge influx of squirrel, musang need to shoot them dead

It is due to detoxification. When one consumes too much toxins, the body will just detox automatically. It applies to other food one consumes as well, not just durians

I bet Tiongs are involved in this nonsense in one way or another. They taint everything they touch. Now, the durian industry.

Your shilling is getting a little too obvious.

For your info, pesticides usage in the durian industry (mainly in Pahang around the towns of Bentong and Raub) started in '80s, long before the Tiongs even knew what a durian - or for that matter a car - looks like. In the '70s you could get 山芭 durians pesticide-free - usually a little smaller, less consistent, but delicious nonetheless. The advent of specialized breeds and big money brought in pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. No choice - people pay top dollar they want perfect looking durians.

Thanks everyone for participating in this thread.

I mean no disrespect if my content contradicts your opinions.

Modern durian cultivation faces severe environmental and ethical challenges.

Over the past few decades, pesticide application has risen dramatically compared to the 1980s, and even self-proclaimed "organic" farms frequently misuse chemicals.

Field observations reveal a stark drop in local bird populations because farmers treat soil and flowers with toxins to deter wildlife. Furthermore, industry insiders and Malaysian farmers report that corporate syndicates use intimidation tactics to force smaller orchards out of business. Alarmingly, modern growers rely heavily on highly toxic, restricted herbicides and pesticides—such as DDT, paraquat, endosulfan, profenofos, monocrotophos, and methamidophos—some of which are strictly banned even under international and Chinese regulatory frameworks.

Yes durian estates are very quiet now, birds, squirrels all dead after eating the flowers/buds.

I disagree.

Our AVA/SFA found harmful substances from Malaysian and Chinese veges. However, raising a public alarm risks triggering severe food inflation.

Similarly, if Singapore were the first to reveal that harmful HHPs are present in Malaysian durians, it would likely provoke a retaliatory trade war.
