KUALA LUMPUR: A member of the 1990s hip hop group Nico G, Dino, claims that he ate seven durians the day before he suffered a stroke, believing that he didn't want to miss the opportunity to enjoy the king of fruits while it was in season.
The 50-year-old, whose real name is Mohd Shah Rosli, suffered a stroke three weeks ago, which affected the right side of his body.
He believes that a combination of an uncontrolled diet and heavy smoking caused his health issues.
"I love durian, and whenever it's in season, I have to eat it. The day before the incident, I ate seven local durians. The next morning, this happened. When I spoke to the doctor, my mouth still smelled of durian," he said.
"I have also smoked since I was young. So, that might have contributed to my health problems. However, I am trying to quit," he said after a visit from the Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching, at his home in Kampung Baru, in conjunction with the Ziarah Seni Madani programme.
Also present were the Chairman of the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Datuk Hans Isaac; Finas Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib; and the Persatuan Seniman Malaysia (Seniman) President, Zed Zaidi.
During the Ziarah Seni Madani programme, Dino received cash donations and food baskets from the Ministry of Communications and Finas.
Dino, who works as a salesperson at a shopping mall, is currently on sick leave.
"For now, my employer has given me leave until I recover. Previously, my employer helped me with a donation of RM500.
"But after a month, I had no income. As a result, I asked for help. Now I'm relying on my existing savings," said Dino, who lives with his father and aunt.
Dino is grateful that his condition is improving.
"At the start, I couldn't move much, and I couldn't even speak clearly. But, day by day, I tried to fight and persevere. In the end, I'm better than before.
"I will be more careful with my diet and take all the medication prescribed by the doctor. I have to take blood thinners constantly to prevent cholesterol blockages," he added.
Dino mentioned that he needs follow-up treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital every two weeks.
He also receives alternative or traditional treatment, which includes massages costing around RM200 per session.
