Saw Phaik Hwa joins Hour Glass
Former SMRT CEO has been appointed independent non-executive director of Hour Glass.

SINGAPORE - Former chief executive of SMRT Saw Phaik Hwa will be joining Hour Glass as an independent non-executive director from September 1, The Business Times reported Wednesday.

The former SMRT head left the transport provider earlier this year after two major train disruptions caused public outcry and sparked the formation of a Committee of Inquiry (COI).

In May, Saw was named chief executive officer of Singapore-listed Auric Pacific Group.

Ms. Saw has held various leadership roles in DFS Venture Singapore, the duty-free retail chain.

Profits for SMRT had increased from $56.8 million in 2002 to $161.1 million in 2011 under her leadership.

The tens of thousands of man hours lost because of her debacle at SMRT cost sinkieland much much more than the increase in profits. Productivity was directly impacted on a nationwide scale.

That's the problem with having CEOs in companies. Companies have shareholders. These CEOs have to answer to these people who bought these shares. So, they just project short-term benefits or objectives to reap quick profits to push up these share prices. They cannot tell whether they will still be needed by their directors or not. So, hit and run. In the long-term, disasters awaiting to unfold.
