BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police said today that two tourists from the UK and Canada were accused of painting graffiti on the historic walls of Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand. Once they are found guilty, they will face up to 10 years in prison.

Police pointed out that 23-year-old Britishman Furlong Lee and his peer-aged Canadian Brittney Schneider were arrested yesterday at a homestay in Chiang Mai. The two are currently detained in provincial courts.

The monitor screen shows that Li and Schneider graffiti graffiti on the red brick wall near the Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai. Tha Pae Gate is the main entrance to the ancient city of Chiang Mai.

Anon Cherdchutrakulthong, the police chief of Chiang Mai, told Reuters: "They confess to committing crimes.... When people go to a place to visit, they should know not to (leave) graffiti."

Annong also said that the two young people had not hired a lawyer, and the signs showed that they were drunk at the time of the crime.

According to the image obtained by Reuters, the ancient city wall of Chiang Mai was graffiti written by Scouser Lee. Scouser means residents of the British city of Liverpool. The Thai police did not confirm whether Li was from Liverpool.

The police said the two faced a maximum of 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 1 million baht (about NT$950,000), or a combination of both. Central News Agency (translation)
