Why Tfr is at a all time low

As someone who’s been on the fence for a very long time . I guess I’ll list down my concerns as to why I think people are not having kids

  1. I gave up my whole youth , studying like a dog to get into ntu but now all my colleagues are people from
third or second tier universities coming from overseas . If I had known there was an easier path , I would’ve gone to that second tier university and come here as PR , way easier to get a job

2.Sinkie Pawn Sinkie mindset

We hate to see each other thrive and thus bring down other Singaporeans unlike our fellow China and Indian colleagues . They pull each other up , give each promotions . 20 years down the road , their children will be the ones getting all the jobs because even as ‘new’ citizens there will always be a difference in how they speak . Etc as soon as they open their mouth and speak with a China accent . They’re through == my kids will be second class citizens

3. Decreasing wealth per generation

There used to be a joke where they said millennials were the generation to be poorer than their parents. And my husband reminded me ‘yet’ , and soon I realised every generation since millennials are poorer than the former . Aka Gen z graduating with no jobs , in the middle of all the crisses. I only fear for what’s to come for Gen alpha and my imaginary kids generation . Our previous generation used to dream of 5Cs , now our generation only dream of resale hdb in non ulu area , cars are just a fever dream at this point . At the only C we get is CDC vouchers . I would dream of a world where the younger generation carries more wealth and has more hope than my generation

4. Every year is worse than the previous

I’m born in 1997 and graduated in 2020s meaning that my life since graduation has only been turbulent . I graduated during peak covid which meant wonders for my starting pay. I’ve endured covid , job uncertainties and every year seems to have a whole new problem bigger and bolder than the previous year . For example , this year I was like yes maybe I will really reconsider kids at this point but then the oil crisis hit and it’s still hitting it’s not been resolved which means our cost of living is not only going to sky rocket after this but we may even face food security uncertainties . There has never been a peaceful year in my 20s and I’m sure the world will only grow more turbulent in the coming decades

5.global warming

Every year is so fucking hot

6.the school lunches

Minor issue but what’s up with the kids lunches these days . It’s bad enough they have to waste their whole childhood studying for a degree that won’t even get them a job , but to eat shitty food while at it? No thanks lol

Maybe I feel secretly resentful for all the trying and existing parents out there who don’t think of all these issues. They’re stupidly optimistic and say things like ‘aiya don’t think so much , what will come will come’ or ‘babies are cute! Don’t u want a little you’ I mean all these are very weak arguments to me . Like I do want kids but u know I cannot in good conscience bring them into the world knowing and feeling the way I feel .

Edit oh and also the childless girl minister in charge of family or the childless pm Wong not making it better .

In our cut throat corporate world , there is really no protection for mothers at all .

She forgot to mention the rapid growth of AI and how it'll impact jobs in the next 3-5 years. Also, the persistent CECA problem to take jobs away from locals.
