SINGAPORE: Three books have been banned in Singapore for containing "exclusivist or extremist religious views that promote enmity among different religious communities", the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) said on Tuesday (Nov 20).

Two of the books also promote divisive views against other groups within the same religion, MCI said.

The books are: Things That Nullify One’s Islaam by Shaykh al-Islaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdil-Wahhaab; What Islam Is All About (Student Textbook) by Yahiya Emerick; and The Wisdom of Jihad by Abuhuraira Abdurrahman.

The teachings and ideologies in the books "are detrimental to Singapore’s inter and intra racial and religious harmony and relations", MCI said.

As such, they have been gazetted as prohibited publications under the Undesirable Publications Act.

"The Singapore Government has zero tolerance for individuals or publications which aim to incite hostility or violence among different religious groups, and has therefore decided to prohibit these publications," MCI added.

The ban is effective Nov 21. Those who have a copy of the publications should hand them to the police, MCI said.

In a separate statement, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) said also that books "advocate problematic and extremist views" and "encourage a culture of violence".

"These three books promote dangerous ideas that have been widely circulated in radical circles to justify crimes and violence. They run contrary to a peaceful, moderate understanding and practice of Islam in multi-cultural societies, and are harmful to socio-religious life in Singapore," said MUIS, recommending that they be restricted from circulation in Singapore.

Things That Nullify One’s Islaam promotes hatred and animosity towards non-Muslims, MUIS said. It also makes an obligation for any Muslim “to hate the disbelievers and have animosity towards them, and not to ally oneself with them, even if they were the closest of a Muslim’s relatives”, MUIS added.

What Islam Is All About (Student Textbook) propagates the importance of establishing an Islamic state, said MUIS, adding that the author accuses Muslim rulers of being hypocrites and slaves to the Christians. The author also denigrates non-Muslims, particularly Christians, MUIS said.

“Such views may lead to intolerance and cause non-discerning readers to develop animosity towards the West,” MUIS said.

The third book, The Wisdom of Jihad, urges Muslims to wage armed jihad against non-Muslims, as well as Muslims who do not conform to the author’s view of jihad. MUIS said the book also shares the same exclusivist and radical narratives as ISIS, and glorifies a Muslim rebel group in the Philippines, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

MUIS added in its statement that it wanted to remind the public that it is an offence to distribute prohibited publications.

It is also an offence for a person to possess any prohibited publication, or come into possession of any prohibited publication and fail to hand it over to the police.

Those convicted may be fined, jailed or both.

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Finns have been arrested on a holiday island in Muslim-majority Malaysia for allegedly distributing pamphlets about Christianity, police said Wednesday (Nov 21), and may face up to five years in jail.

Religion is a deeply sensitive issue in Malaysia, where more than 60 per cent of the populaton is Muslim, and critics say rising conservatism has chipped away at a traditionally tolerant brand of Islam in recent years.

Authorities detained the two men and two women on Tuesday after receiving complaints from members of the public that they were handing out Christian materials on the popular resort island of Langkawi, said local police chief Mohamad Iqbal Ibrahim.

"Police have arrested four Finnish nationals in Langkawi for allegedly distributing religious material in a public place," he told AFP.

"They were distributing pamphlets related to Christianity."

The Finns, aged between 27 and 60, were arrested at a hotel and police seized pens, notebooks and a bag.

They are accused of breaking laws that forbid people from disturbing religious harmony. If found guilty, they could be jailed for between two and five years.

The suspects have been remanded in custody while police investigate.

Langkawi, a jungle-clad island in northwest Malaysia, attracts millions of tourists to its palm-fringed beaches every year.

Malaysia, home to about 32 million people, has sizeable ethnic Chinese and Indian communities who have long complained about rising Islamisation.

In 2010, three churches were attacked with firebombs, causing major damage to one, as Muslims sought to prevent Christians from using the word "Allah".

Issues related to race, religion and language are considered sensitive in Malaysia, which witnessed deadly riots between members of the majority Malay community and ethnic Chinese in 1969.

KUALA LUMPUR: The woman who was berated for promoting Carlsberg beer at the non-halal section of a hypermarket here is thankful for the encouraging words and support she has received, the brewery said today.

The promoter has, however, requested for privacy in the aftermath of the incident that has gone viral on social media, said Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Lars Lehmann.

“We respect the promoter’s decision not to further pursue the matter. She appreciates the encouraging words and support received from all parties.

“Nonetheless, she urged all parties to respect her privacy by not circulating any images, videos and personal information of her,” said Lehmann in a statement, as reported by the Malay Mail today.

Carlsberg Malaysia, said Lehmann, was "very upset" by the treatment accorded to the woman who was carrying out her duties according to the stipulated rules and regulations.

The harassment she experienced, he added, was unacceptable.

“We are very proud of how she handled the difficult situation and immediately offered support to her when she reported the incident,” he said.

Lehmann also made it clear that Carlsberg’s sampling activities were strictly for non-Muslim of legal purchasing age.

In a video clip that has gone viral on social media, a man, who identifies himself as Edi Rejang, was seen harassing the promoter at a hypermarket said to be in Ampang.

He was recording a video of the salesgirl promoting an alcoholic beverage to customers at the hypermarket.

Edi, whose face could not be seen in the video, was heard asking the girl if she was giving out samples of the drink to everyone.

To this, the girl replied firmly in the negative, saying she only offered samples of the drink to non-Muslims.

The girl then spoke to Edi in English, after which he remarked that this is 'Bumi Melayu' and she should converse in Malay.

Unperturbed by his provocation, the girl merely smiled and asked if he was being racist to which he kept saying 'no, no, no.'

He then made a rude gesture to the girl, which was visible in the video.

It was reported that the police were investigating the case under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which deals with offences where words or gestures are used with the intention to insult the modesty of a person.

It carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, a fine, or both upon conviction.

'I am not racist', says man who berated beer promoter

PETALING JAYA: The man who berated a beer promoter has come forward to say that he is not a racist.

"I am not racist because my child studies in a Chinese school. I also have friends who are Chinese," said Mohamad Edi Bin Mohamad Riyars, who is known as Edi Rejang.

"At that time I was too tired from work and was angry, and I became too emotional since it had to do with alcohol. I sincerely apologise to the woman," he said in a video posted on Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng's Facebook page.

Mohamad Edi said he initially wanted to buy groceries at that hypermarket, adding that he noticed a woman who was offering beer samples to shoppers as he was walking by a crowd of people.

"As it was a narrow section, I saw many people congregating there but that place was a non-halal section and I did not check first. As I was very angry at that time, I took out my phone and decided to take a video of that woman, to question her, show that obscene gesture and walk away," he said.

He added that he did not know why he decided to act in that manner, clarifying that it happened spontaneously.

"I did not have any intention to be racist. We are 1Malaysia; the Chinese, Indians and the Malays all have their rights. It was my fault as I had walked through that area which was non-halal but I went in and hurled abusive words in that place," he said.

Mohamad Edi also said that he hoped he would be able to meet the woman in person to apologise.

Lim had said in the video that he was not sure if the woman accepted his apology, but added that he would contact the woman to get her views on this issue.

Mohamad Edi had earlier also apologised to the woman and to all Malaysians in a video that was uploaded on Twitter.

In a statement by Carlsberg Malaysia, the beer promoter has also decided not to pursue the matter further.

On Monday (Nov 21), a video clip of a shopper berating a beer promoter for giving out beer samples in the alcohol section of a hypermarket went viral on social media.

In the video, the girl had remained calm even though the shopper scolded her and demanded to know if she was promoting the beer to "anyone", including Muslims.

As the promoter was about to defend herself in English, he criticised her and insisted that she speak in Bahasa Melayu because this is "Bumi Melayu".

The man then made an obscene hand gesture and spewed vulgarities at her before walking away.

The promoter could be heard in the video saying, "You are hilarious."
