Now that I have some free time to play with my Ipad I see that there are many "FREE" apps, magazines, etc at the Apple store. When I try to download the free stuff I am asked for my apple ID & credit card number.

As I am only looking at things that are supposed to be "FREE" does anyone know why I have to provide my Credit card info:confused:

you need to set up your apple or itunes account with an id, password and credit card account before making purchases from the app store or itunes, even if the purchase is "free". when you download and install a free app, your account will not be charged a single cent. the problem lies with inadvertent purchases of non-free apps or music, ebook or video downloads by mistake. apple is toying with the idea of refunding parents whose kids make purchases while parents log in with their credentials and leave their ipads unattended for 15 minutes. go ahead and set up an account. it's a prereq for getting freebies from the app store or itunes. some free apple apps are great: keynote, numbers, iphoto, ibooks, imovies, pages. keynote is equivalent to powerpoint from microsoft, numbers equivalent to excel, pages equivalent to word, and so on. you can do all your "laptop-like" work on ipad without paying big bucks for some ms crap software with the name of "msorifice". :p

After hearing about so many cases of credit card info being hacked from various vendors I'm hesitant about providing my credit information for "free" apps:(
However if it is a requirement by Apple then there's not much choice I guess.

That's one of the secret success of Apple. Their App store revenue exceeds $10 b last year.

Don't mind spending some $ on some apps to make my iPad more useful.
I've browsed through the apps & newstand & am surprised at the number of FREE stuff. I even came across the mexican edition of Playboy:eek: I've always wanted to learn mexican:D

Anyone know if I can use my PC/Mac to torrent digital photos & transfer them to an iPad for viewing  The iPad screen is really beautiful & it makes a great device for viewing photos.

When I got the iPad it only came with a sheet showing a picture showing the on/off switch, ear phone,....etc Had to try to figure things out by trial & error:(

I am finding the iPad a very versatile gadget. I've already successfully transferred the music from my iPod to the iPad. As it supports blue tooth I've connected the iPad to a Sony blue tooth external speaker. I have also tried connecting it to a blue tooth headphone. All easy to do without my encountering any problems.
I've even tried some free apps. The FREE apps are of course limited but can still be useful.

For example the app "WiFi HD" allows one to transfer files from a Mac/PC to the iPad wirelessly. The freebie version has restrictions on the files size but that's ok because my files are small. I can now download PDF files to my iPad & read them on the road. What is stopping me from buying this app is because there are so many similar apps & I don't know which is the best:) Anyone who wants to transfer files between a Mac/PC to an iPad should search the app store for "usb disk" you'll find plenty of apps.

For those who want to listen to internet radio stations you can find apps that do so. Just do a search of the app store e.g. "internet radio"

give app "tune in" a try

It has a nicer interface than iRadio HD that makes searching for local radio stations easier e.g. 90.5 but you get all the unwanted ads.

I have to say that the sound quality of the iPad Air is surprising good for it's small size. Only problem is that if you use it in portrait mode you may cover the twin speakers at the bottom.
