A man, believed to be drunk, sparked terror, sending people scurrying to safety, as he walked around with a parang near Toa Payoh Lorong 7 wet market and food centre on Monday afternoon.

Described as looking disturbed, he was talking to himself and at one point, took out money from his wallet and threw it in the air towards a dustbin.

He also hacked at a dustbin with his parang before turning the weapon on himself, chopping at his own torso, as he threatened to kill himself.

When the police arrived, the 57-year-old man refused to put down the parang and continued threatening to kill himself.

The officers finally resorted to using a Taser gun (an electroshock weapon) to subdue the man. He was arrested and taken to Changi General Hospital.

Drunk in broad daylight? great.... look like an ah neh.....

I would have just used a bullet.

with your twitching eye, i think you need a semi-auto weapon and a few magazines fully loaded...

I have a marksmanship badge to prove I can shoot straight despite the handicap.

I would have just used a bullet.

He would have taken a bullet if he was charging at the cops. Lucky for that drunken fool, he did not. Being tazed is not fun either, but beats being dead.

It's correct that wielding a parang in most circumstances, i.e. threatening injury or death to police and public, warrants police to shoot him. However, since this man was showing insane and suicidal behaviour, police shouldn't shoot him.
