He was arrested again while out on bail for cutting his electronic tag off.
Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of suicide.
After his girlfriend broke up with him over his gambling habits, an auxiliary police officer in Singapore brought out a loaded revolver from work with the intention to kill himself.
Devastated over the breakup, Heng Jun Hao, 29, went to watch a movie at the Bugis+ cinema first to devise a plan before doing so.
However, he was caught after the movie by police officers who were looking for him along Victoria Street.
He was charged and later released on bail, only to get arrested again after cutting his electronic tag off.
Heng said he did so as had wanted to drown himself after losing his job.
On Oct. 28, he pleaded guilty to one count of unlawfully carrying a revolver and 10 rounds of ammunition and one count of mischief for cutting his e-tag, reported CNA.
Two other charges will be considered in sentencing.Girlfriend broke up with him
Heng was a auxiliary police officer under Certis Cisco Security since October 2023 and was attached to the Civil Aviation Authority Singapore at Changi Airport. He had been gambling since he was 20, with his habit worsening over the years.
Despite promising his girlfriend that he would quit, he did not stop and she broke up with him on May 8, 2024.
This devastated Heng.Took gun from work
The next day, Heng reported for work and was issued with his operational equipment at the Certis Cisco armoury, which included one .38 Taurus revolver, 10 rounds of .38 ammunition and one extendable baton. As part of standard operational procedure, he loaded five rounds of ammunition into his revolver and loaded the remaining five rounds into his speed loader.
After completing his shift from 7:45am to 7:45pm, he was supposed to return his equipment, but told his partner that he needed to use the washroom due to a stomachache.Inside the washroom, Heng placed his loaded revolver, speed loader and baton into his backpack and left.
He took a taxi to Sim Lim Square and walked around to Bugis Junction and Bugis+ before going into the latter to watch a movie at the cinema at about 9:30pm.
Manhunt
Meanwhile, an automated system alert had been sent to Certis Cisco at about 8:35pm after it was detected that Heng did not return his items within the stipulated time period.
Certis personnel were deployed to search for Heng but to no avail. The police were alerted at about 9:55pm and more than 100 officers were deployed in a manhunt for him.
At about 12:20am the next day, Heng left the cinema after his movie ended and was at Victoria Street when police officers spotted him.
He was arrested, with the weapon and accompanying items found on him.
Admitted to wanting to kill himself
During investigations, Heng said he had taken the gun and ammunition to kill himself as he felt he had disappointed his family and girlfriend.
He said he "saw no reason in living since he had failed everyone he loved", CNA reported. He was later released on court bail in June 2024 with electronic tagging as one of his bail conditions.
Certis had also suspended him from service pending further police investigations.
Removed his e-tag
While out on bail, Heng had a job as a concierge at Paya Lebar Quarter Mall, but lost the job on Oct. 14, 2024.
Intending to kill himself again, he removed the e-tag.On Oct. 17, 2024, the police were notified of this based on an alert from the e-tag monitoring system.
Plainclothes police officers later spotted and arrested him at Decathlon Singapore Lab in Kallang at about 4pm that day.
He later admitted he had cut the tag with scissors at home in order to evade police and drown himself in the sea.
The case was adjourned to Dec. 18, 2025, for mitigation and sentencing. For unlawful possession of any arm or ammunition, Heng could be jailed between five and 14 years and given at least six strokes of the cane.
For mischief by cutting of e-tag, Heng could be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
