WELLINGTON: New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Tuesday cancelled plans to meet Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Christchurch on Saturday.
Key, who was scheduled to leave on Friday for a trip to Britain and France, said he was staying in New Zealand to show solidarity with residents of the country's second largest city.
Key said he would travel to Christchurch Tuesday to further assess the impact of the quake, which he said on a visit Sunday had left the city resembling a "ghost town".
"There's a job to be done and I'm going to go down there and be part of it," he said.
Key had planned to meet Queen Elizabeth II at her residence in Balmoral, as well as hold talks in London with British Prime Minister David Cameron and in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

When problems occur, where are our multi million dollar ministars?
How come Mr Key doesn't say no amount of engineering can prevent earthquakes? How come Mr Key doesn't say it's once in 80 years?!
Hello Yakult, are you listening? You people should be ashamed of yourselves. What a sickening cuntry with sickening LEEders!
