Yes, I asked some top legal eagles. A thank you is a response to a gift. A thank you is not a bargain. NSP didn't bargain for a thank you from Sylvia in return for giving up Macpherson. If anything, a thank you proves the acceptor receives the offer as a gift.

A consideration must be something of value in the eyes of law, not love or affection, let alone words expressing gratitude.

Sylvia Lim has paid the due consideration to NSP's offer. So there was offer and acceptance.

I think the functions of the doggie parties has evolved over the years. Traditionally, it was to discredit opposition by having clowns like Harban singh and to split opposition votes. Back then many pap wards were returned unopposed and they still garnered overall about 70% of votes cast.

Of late, doggie parties were made to contest in wards that would otherwise had been a walkover. They are worried that the overall % of votes for pap would be less than 50%, which would be embarrassing. Without those doggie parties, pap can actually be returned with 2/3 majority but with less than 50% of the votes cast supporting them. This will happen if there are many wards enjoying walkover and their winning margins are very low while margins of losses are high.

To prevent such a result, doggie parties are put in to contest at constituencies that will otherwise be uncontested. The winning % of these wards obviously will be high with doggies making a fool of themselves to irritate the voting public and would help to push up the overall %.

SDA with Desmond Lim and NSP with Steve Chia are making fools of themselves. Punggol/PR GRC and Macpherson MSC voters can teach these doggies and the PAP a lesson on how not to use dirty tactics

Also, pay attention to those who have been around for a long time. They hardly stay loyal to one party. More significantly, who were those around JBJ when he was charged in court. You will find some of them were also around when Chiam was ousted at a time SDP was rising up. No coincidence, I assure you.

WP offered to give up Macpherson SMC if NSP gives up Marine Parade GRC. NSP didn't take up the offer. So offer was void.

NSP counter offered to give up Macpherson and Marine Parade to WP. WP accepted NSP's offer and gave a consideration when Sylvia thanked NSP.

It's a done deal. There was Offer, Acceptance and Consideration. WP will contest Macpherson and Marine Parade.

It seems more and more the case that NSP's existence is to give the illusion of electoral contest but without posing an actual danger to the PAP.

On a historical note, NSP was formed in the wake of the 1987 "Marxist" detentions (Ops Spectrum), at a time when the climate of political fear in SG was very high. Either they are truly brave souls who wanted to make a stand, or they were organized by some hidden forces to make sure opposition in SG does not go completely under.

Now it seems the latter explanation is more likely.

There is one man who has been in the party since day 1 of 1987 which is why NSP has never died. Whether he was at the forefront or backend (from NSP president and candidate to a normal election helper), he is the resource behind many if not all the candidates. His wealth comes from a family business which is a famous poultry distribution company and also a chain of fast food stalls which are franchised.

NSP is like an omnibus party that allows anyone and any defector from other opposition parties to contest. If NSP was interested in growing, it will never do that. Any idiotic party leader knows scrutinizing and selecting candidates is part of a party's job, but not NSP.

The serious parties would have rejected them as candidates although they would be assigned to backend roles. It seem that the group did approach WP and this was what happened. I agree we don't know what really happened in 2011 when TT, Hazel and NS left Reform Party. As far as I am concerned, NSP was not their first choice
