NSmen scoffed at $9,000 award to “recognize” their contributions
September 1st, 2010 | Author: Your Correspondent
Contrary to what was reported in the mainstream media, most NSmen are unhappy with the $9,000 award to be given to each of them by MINDEF to recognize their contributions to the nation.
The new National Service Recognition Award was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his National Day Rally speech following rising disgruntlement among Singaporeans that they are unnecessarily burdened by their NS obgliations while the foreigners enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The amount will be deposited in the post-secondary education funds and CPFs of the NSmen in three separate tranches.
Many NSmen felt that $9,000 is hardly enough to compensate for the sacrifices they have made for the nation with some regarding it as an affront to their dignity. Others said they will gladly accept the award, but will still vote against the PAP regime to protest its policies in the coming election.
Ang K Y is obviously offended by the award:
“I feel insulted because the money cannot be use or touch. It is tied into my CPF which is as good as nothing. It is like I promise to give you a sum of money for a job well done but I put it inside an bank account which you draw out the money after you retire or after you die, do you think this ‘money’ is any good to you? 看得到,用不到,有个屁用?!”
Sharizal Subari is sceptical if Singaporeans will ever see the money:
“Haha!be prepared people, for the $9000 we get, we will have to pay even if we enter shopping centres, using of lift, pay for air we breathe,n of cos reviews of mrt, bus, taxis fare..the list can go on. Bottom line is u take money u pay double.”
Lionel felt that there is nothing worth defending in Singapore with the relentless influx of foreigners:
“If the males would not defend Singapore, then who would. But then with the amount of foreigners in Singapore ever increasing, you must ask yourself what are you defending for? and is Singapore still worthwhile defending?”
Donnie Tien still felt aggrieved about his NS experience:
“I love my country and I have served my country all these years since I was 18 years old. In order not to let my unit down, I was even doing my ICT the day before my wedding! Over the years I was injured many times during service and ended with a slipped disc condition and a perpetually numbed thigh. What happened the last few years make me question my own dedication. Just because the doctors cannot proof it at first, it took me years and numerous MRIs that I pay out of my own pockets before they believe me and downgraded me.
When I started a new career a few years ago as a fully commissioned sales person, I was shocked that I am not able to claim fully the time spend during ICT base on my taxable income. They would only agreed to paying me partially although IRAS continue to tax my on my full income. I even wrote to the ST forum and they conveniently ignored it.
They use to say “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. I believe I have done my part. What have the country have to say? For a start, they should just pay us fairly for our time. What’s the point of throwing me a cherry when you snatch away the whole cake?”
Calvin Chong asks if he can give the government $9,000 to exempt his child from NS instead:
“In future, can we pay that S$9000 to the government to exempt our male child from NS then? S$9000 for 2 years? You think we are Bangala soilders?”
Kelvin Tay is unmoved by PM Lee’s gesture:
“Seriously, I won’t even take it if its in cold hard cash. Fking use this kinda methods to psycho ppl in their voting decision, simply no integrity and no moral values. And ya, this money gets locked in the cpf, simply speaking, ownership of the money changed, but the ones controling it IS STILL THE SAME. Truly Sinkapore Ptd Ltd. FYI, im not that rich and 9k to me is a freaking substantial amount. Cheers comrades, the day will come.. Change of dynasty/改朝换代”
All Singapore-born males have to serve 2 years of National Service followed by 13 years of reservist obligations which put them at a disadvantage compared to the foreigners, PRs and new citizens who are exempted from NS.
Calls from Singaporeans for the PRs and new citizens to do some sort of NS or community service have gone unheeded with the PAP regime saying that do so will “frighten” them away.
With the playing field tipped strongly in favor of the foreigners, Singaporeans will have little choice but to compete with them on an unequal footing so now the PAP regime remains in power.
